Make "Surround View" default in reverse?

The newer F36s (and presumably others) default to Rear View Camera when putting in reverse. There doesn't seem to be an option to set it to default to Surround View instead!? Any coding or trick that may achieve that?

I find the Top View more useful in 90% of my daily siatuations. Activating it manually takes 2 clicks every time, which is just annoying.

What model year do you have? I have a 2017 F30 and mine doesn't do that, it remembers whatever the last selection was. I'm the opposite and prefer just the rear camera 90% of the time so I switched it to that and haven't had an issue.

I'm not sure about the coding though, I'd have to connect to my car and see what the options are for the cameras. I'll try and do it when I get home from work later today.

It is ModelYear 2018 (LCI).
According to the User Guide as well, the default in reverse is Rear View... Nothing suggests memorising last setting unfortunately. It would be half as bad if at least it was a physical button or single click to switch.

The only situation when Surround View activates itself automatically is if I drive towards an obstacle very slowly (forwards). Then it also remains if I switch to reverse.

Would appreciate assistance

That's weird. When I first got my car, the default view for mine was the surround view. I tried it for a few days and couldn't get used to it so I switched it to rear only and it's been like that since.

But after looking at Bimmercode really quick (didn't go into Export mode, sorry) there are only two options for the front cameras. One to activate the front cameras at any speed or a particular speed, and one to deactivate them the same way. So I guess if you select the Activate at Any Speed they'll stay on? I didn't have time to do it unfortunately but I can try it tomorrow and see if it works?

Or if anyone else has any more experience with coding the front cameras maybe they can help.

I just happened to come across this other thread you posted in, at least you're not alone, haha. It's weird some cars seem to remember the last setting and some don't.

Surround View

Indeed. It seems that this has changed mid 2017.... As some 2017 manufactured vehicle's owners report storage of setting, others lack of.
Not sure if it is related to the LCI, couldn't figure out if there is a user with LCI where the settings are stored...?

I have a 2018 and when you put the car in reverse it does not default to the last view.

In other words it always defaults to Rear View?

Hey guys,

Heres a trick that works for me in the garage.

Cause I'm in the garage, going into drive turns on the surround cameras.

I can then switch to reverse and the cameras remain in surround mode.

I assume i could also press the park assist, which turns on the cameras, then use reverse also.

That is all known, but nothing more than a "workaround"
What we are looking for is the real solution where one does not need to do anything except put in reverse to get surround view.

Otherwise the options are:
- First approach obstacle in the front/side for Surround View to activate itself, then reverse
- push the button before putting in reverse
- once in reverse use the knob to switch off the rear view camera falling back to surround view

I would put it at closer to 100% for me! I had two cars before this one with rear view camera (2011 X3 and 2015 428i). I probably used the rear view camera 5 times or less in those 6 years. If I want to see what's behind me, I can use...oh I don't know....the rear view mirror!!

Alas, I don't think you are going to find a solution. As far as I know, it's not programmable. I would be on it in a second if there was a way to do it!

Garage List
When you're in reverse just bump the idrive controller left then push down and that will bring up the surround view

Great. Just the 2 extra clicks that I would like to avoid doing every time I put in reverse. That's the whole point of the topic. Workarounds should not be necessary.

Was anyone able to find a fix for the surround view camera not being the default for backing up?

Bit of a bump - but my new F36 GC has surround view, and defaults to it on. Not sure what I did because the reversing camera was on initially. May have pressed one of the buttons next to the idrive, or on the idrive menu. Don't want to check in case it changes back - like it how it is

Although the option of a side-by-side reversing + top view would be great. I miss the reversing view sometimes, with the marked obstacles

Wow, that's fantastic, I wish I could just remove rear camera and use Surround view only.
