N20, N26 Forged Internals

Hi guys,

My ride is currently a N20 320i and I'm I have my CP Pistons and Carrillo rods ready to be put into the engine. Anyone here on the forum who's gone down this route? Cheers!

Wow nice, looking forward to hearing your experience with them. I'm not sure I've come across another member whose gone with Carillo for their forged setup. I don't have any Carillo parts either, but please update on the install process and how they perform.

What are your other mods?

I've seen a few posts talking about it, but haven't seen one about actually doing it! Keep us updated!

My car is actually at a workshop and the mechanics are going to be putting her back together. My engine mods so far are,

Wagner Evo 2 Competition Intercooler
GFB +
AHP charge and boost pipe
Codewerx turbo inlet pipe
K&N drop in filter
Sport catted downpipes (200 Cell)
Remus axel back
KSport Coilovers
CJ Dynamics 6 pot front BigBrakeKit
Stage 1 custom tune

Actually my build has hit a snag, it seems that my connecting rods are too wide causing them to hit the cylinder liner. Does anyone know in order to accommodate the carrillo rods, notching or sleeving of cylinders are required? Or it is supposed to be a simple bolt on kind of thing?

Thanks for posting up other mods.

That's interesting... I was under the impression that the Carillo kit was straight bolt-on. I really can't offer any insight, just an observer for this one, but I did find this: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...99&postcount=7 not sure if that'll help but it's worth a look.

Let us know how it goes.

I’ve been in the process of completing my build for the past few months. There’s been a few unexpected hiccups along the way. Firstly the block needed to be notched in order to have the proper clearance for the thicker CP rods. See attached pictures.

As well, for some reason my version of the N26 engine has rods that are 1 mm shorter than CP’s Rods. So we sent CP a sample of my stock rod to manufacture new ones to my specs. All of this has caused several months of delay. We’re not too sure why BMW changed the length of the rods in the later versions of the N20.

I didn’t go with sleeves but I would imagine there would be severel weeks for manufacturing as they would have to be custom as well. Other than that, I went with King bearings and cylinder head porting. It should be finalized in a few weeks.

I have 10:1 carillo pistons and rods but haven't insatlled them because I haven't really found a shop yet besides Lang racing which is pretty far lol. Are you going for a closed deck or leaving it as an open deck If you are going for a closed deck get some Darton sleeves I believe that's what their called.

Very insightful, thanks for that. Also, damn those Carillo rods look nice and beefy

Thank you for shedding some light on your build, its going to be so useful for me and others who are going down this route. So it looks like ill be needing to do some notching at the bottom of the cylinder liner to get the rods fitted in huh. Will you be looking at rebalancing your crankshaft, or is that even necessary? Also are there are structural drawbacks on the block once having done notching (Green boxed) ect.?

Was the specs and part number you got same as the one I got as well in the picture below?

I'm no expert, but I don't think there will be any significant structural repercussions from notching or machine the bottom end for clearance of the rods. However, the cylinder walls on the N20 are pretty thin, so I wouldn't advise any kind of boring/honing or removing material from the cylinder walls, unless you're planning on closing the deck (which probably isn't necessary, especially for the cost). I actually got my cylinder walls recoated and I'm looking into different alternatives for installing a block guard for added rigidity.

The pistons CP sells for the N20 are the same pistons they sell for the N55. So the ones you have must be the same ones I had.

Block guard would be perfect.

Possibly even block filler, but cooling might be an issue.

Notching will not have any effect and yes as you can see from the pics above it is required as they are beefy.
Cylinder walls are thin and I would strongly recommend sleeves to push over 450WHP as you will flex or crack them.
Recoating walls when going with forged components is not necessary as long as the rings are made for LOW drag like the stock ones.
You will always want to balance the rotating assembly, especially if you going all forged etc.

What makes this build different than Steve Dinan's current offerings?

Do we think he had to modify the block as well or just used different part numbers?

Interesting question... they also used CP Carillo Pistons and Connecting Rods, so I'd be interested to see if he notched the block, used a unique or one-off part or found a different solution.

I finally received all the right sized rods after a few months of manufacturing and the machine work on the block was finalized. The block is being assembled this week and should be going in the car the following week.

I’ve attached some photos: the new rods vs the old rods, the topside of the block (where you see the carrillo piston), the bottom end (where you see the machining), and a view of inside the cylinder where you could kind of see the notching.

I think it’s looking good and I’m pretty excited to see the final results. I'll post an update when the whole thing is assembled and tuned.

Nice build! So what are you paying for this labor? Also what turbo are you going with since you are building the block up? Be a shame to leave it on the PS2 turbo only.
