Stupid question?

As per the title......

Am I just unlucky with usb chargers (plugging into the front cigarette lighter slot by the cupholders) not charging? Two I have work fine in the one under the passenger glovebox.....

Don't really want to spend £30 on the BMW one.

Any thoughts?

Cheers buddy.

The ones I've got just don't draw any power other than in the one under the glovebox.

Seems crazy that the power connection points are different sizes/more temperamental!

Do other things work in the socket, you could have blown the fuse

Mine has a dummy lighter in and has never had any power to it! Should it have and if so is it on a different fuse to the one under the glove box which works perfectly?

I think the general rule is dont buy cheap ones off Ebay etc as they are quite often foreign copies of genuine products without all the safety features required for reliable operation!!

That's exactly what I'm seeing. Need to try other chargers to find one that works I guess?

Hear what you're saying, but my Anker one just doesn't power up. Guess it's a BMW next....

What I am saying is mine has NO power to it at all! Nothing will work in it!So it has nothing to do with which charger you are using! It is either not wired up or on a separate fuse which is blown!Yours maybe similar!

You've acquired an expensive, high-end car. Why quibble about an additional £30 for the original accessory??

Zero issues with my Anker one, used in various cars for over two years.

If nothing works in it then maybe the fuse has blown. Its right next to the cup holders so it would be very easy to splash liquid into it i guess!

OK. Found a really old TomTom charger with cigarette adapter, plugged it in by the cup holders, and it has power. Looking at it, there's a slightly longer nib and metal pin to connect, so assume my Anker is just a little on the short side, and fails to make a metal-on-metal connection and establish the circuit.

A fuse went in mine, and the dealer changed it under warranty lol.
He said the problem is that its not the same as normal 12v sockets as its ALL live rather than just the bottom but, so if you have something in it when you start the car, it blows the fuse. Not sure how true that is, but I've had a BMW dual usb thing in it ever since.
