Always take a video of any condition like this, and show it to the dealer when you drop the car off for service. It helps keep them from declining to perform the repair because they "couldn't replicate" the issue.

I must have a good SA because I just got my actuator replaced under CPO. No more issue........so far. It seem really smooth and fully goes up when it’s unlocked. Unlike before it went up slow and not all the way.

i got my passenger front door lock actuator replaced under CPO for this issue as well, and it was slow as crap when locking and unlocking. now, with the new actuator, it shows how bad the other 3 doors are as well. i'm going to ask them to take a look and replace the others at my next service.

Was anyone able to get this fixed using video proof alone? I have videos of my driver and passenger side doing it. It happens to my 2013 335i every other month or so. Really low reproducibility.

I am under CPO warranty until 03/2019 and the SA wanted to charge me $170 to diagnose the issue and if they couldn't reproduce it with the tech, they would not fix the issue and I would be out the $170. When I produced the video, he said it could be someone else's car that I was filming...Why would I want the dealer to randomly replace my lock actuators? He said BMW will not honor warranty repairs unless the issue occurs for the tech.

Is this true? Or should I just try to go to a different dealer?

I'm kind of boiling as this is the first CPO warranty claim I tried to get resolved.

I would have demanded to talk to the service manager. He basically accused you of lying.

Tell him you will gladly take another video next time it happens and pan around to show it is, in fact, your car. I agree also to take it up the chain--does he really think that you want to just waste everyone's time filming someone else's bad lock actuator so you can get yours replace?

I had mine replaced under CPO with no questions asked. Talk to someone else at the dealer.

Been having a slow lock/unlock on my front passenger door. Today, I drove someone to lunch and the door wouldn't open, the lock kept going back down. I unlocked using the central console and it worked fine. My factory warranty just ran out, but I am under CPO for another year, going to see if they will replace it. There should really be a TSB on this given how many people have had issues. Will report back once I know more.

It's a bad door actuator. I had this exact issue on my passenger door. My passenger occasionally couldn't get out. Next time it happens, try unlocking with the button on the dash. If that works, it's the actuator.

I had the actuators in both front doors replaced. What is confusing is why pressing the unlock button near the centre vent always successfully unlocks the door, I appreciate that pulling the door unlock handle is a mechanical action whereas the button is electrical but would it not give the actuator a kick to unlock in the same manner?

Just to add, my 2014 428ix is having the same issue suddenly. Passenger and driver frequently but not always.

Im in the same boat with driver side door. Doesn't really bother me enough to spend much to fix.

Has anyone replaced the actuator, DIY? How difficult?

Same thing just started happening for me as well, driver side only. Also will be looking for a DIY fix.

Update on my situation. I got the car into BMW on Saturday late day to get the lock actuator swapped out. I told them I knew it was a pretty common problem and asked if there was a recall for it (there is not). The advisers were joking with me it would either be a $50 deductible or a $600 job depending on if the CPO warranty covered it. I told them to call me if it wasn't covered by CPO so I could do it myself. Got the call this afternoon that they put in a new actuator free of charge (not even the CPO deductible).

Aside from the fact a lock actuator should not fail on a four year old vehicle, BMW, and this dealership in particular, has treated me well, so I am a happy customer and cannot complain.

Hi guys, more of the same with me. 13 335 xi cpo. Had been having intermittent issues with the passenger door not unlocking on the first pull. Took it in and they said it was the Bowden cable that needed replaced and quoted me some ridiculous sum to do so, I declined (not covered under cpo b/c the cable is a non electrical component) Couple months later and now drivers side as well as passenger are having the issue. Question is should I try and replace the cables and see if that helps, if not take it back in? I feel like since they already told me it was the cable they are going to require that fix before they replace the cpo covered actuator, and if that works I have to fight with them to get reimbursed. Take it to another dealer? Door lock button unlocks everything and able to get out same as most others. Advice would be appreciated.

It's the door actuators. You need to replace both of them. It's easy.

I get that but wondering how to go about it when they already told me its the cable that needs replaced, or are you suggesting I diy? They quoted me like $800 or something crazy at Motorwerks, definitely not paying that. Thinking maybe I should take it to Minetonka..

Haha crazy I'm from Minneapolis too. I was suggesting you DIY as they are totally wrong about the issue. I had the same problem a few months back and Bloomington told me that it may or may not be covered. I did the work myself and it is fixed. Because it unlocks with the unlock button, it has to be the actuator.

$50 dollar deductible.
$60 dollar savage part.

Fuck em.

Yea saw that that's why I mentioned the dealership names. Alright, I might just do that, i'm definitely fed up with Motorwerks and vowed to never return unless I knew for a fact it was covered under warranty. Would you mind telling me where you got the parts and any chance you might want to help a brother out with the install since you're local and have that specific experience? I can supply beer...

Just sent you a PM. I would be more than willing to help out another local bimmer enthusiast.

I took mine to Motorwerks for my last maintenance package and was told that they couldn't give me my yearly set of wipers because I got the last ones in November of 2017.

They literally told me to come back in a week instead of just giving me them like 8 days early. My SA agreed that it was stupid, but had to follow policy.
