Meguiars Brake Dust Barrier
When I first used this on my wheels 8 months ago, I had some problem with overspray as its not easy to get a full coverage without using too much. Fast forward to last week, I think it's about time to re coat the wheels with BDB so I cleaned the wheels with wheel cleaner and dry it with MF towel. After 30 minutes, I spray the wheels with BDB and there were still some water coming out as a spray. I remove the water drops as I spray and I think I got a nice coverage on all wheels and then I went to sleep. The next morning, it was horror. All four wheels were covered with white milky residue. I tried searching for more information about BDB online but came up with really limited information. I used rubbing alcohol to try to remove the milky residue with little effect. Then I use 3M asphalt and tar remover and it seem to remove the milky residue about 80%. And then I tried using IPA with MF towel buy this doesn't help at all. Is there a good way to absolutely clean the wheels without damaging the original clear coat? I'm worried that I might have already damaged the clear coating on the alloy wheels.

The source of the residue is likely water that was trapped underneath the BDB when it was applied. This is a commonly reported problem. It might look bad but it's probably best to let it naturally wear off.

How old is the product? It was discontinued back in 2015. Comments about it state "be sure to have the wheel completely dry before applying or you will end up with white residue."

Meguiar's Hot Rims Brake Dust Barrier is unfortunately no longer produced so it is going to be difficult to find a distributor which still has some. The product should be applied to a completely clean and dry wheel, spray on a light coat, and let the product dry. We have seen many months of durability even when using aggressive wheel cleaners for maintenance, but again unfortunately the product is discontinued.

Yeah, I gotta admit that when I used it, my wheels are not completely dry so the BDB probably reacted with the water vapors that resulted in the milky residue. I was really horrified when I saw the residue because of the severity.
I bought the BDB less than a year ago and I can still get from Meguiars online shop in Thailand. I didn't know it was discontinued in the US. But since it's such a difficult job to get it right, it's probably better for Meguiars to come up with a new product that's more user friendly. |

ArmorAll recently came out with their own product Outlast Brake Dust Repellent which serves same purpose. They also have the disclaimer about clean/fry wheels before applying.
I've used it following the instructions and it does seem to help
