Registering f31 Uk Headlights problem
Hello guys, this is my first post.
My name is Fabio and I work and live in Manchester So just bought and imported an f31 luxury line 2014 from Germany, my objective is to register the car in the UK and then in six months time take the car to my home country (Portugal). I am trying to register the car. I have my speedometer dial being changed to MPH, the fog lights at the rear are fine, I am just having problems with the halogen headlights. They point to the right side of the road, I took it to a garage for a mot, and the guy told me he will pass the car in the MOT if I have beam deflectors stickers on. The problem is the mutual recognition from VCA who requests proof as the headlights have been changed. So I think I have 3 options: 1) Do the MOT, send the mot certificate to the VCA and pray they will accept only the mot certificate as evidence of the lights being ok to drive in the UK. 2) Find some cheap halogen rhd headlights, and have them fitted in the car. 3) Buy some aftermarket headlights ( with flat beam pattern if they exist) and have them fitted in the car. After the car being registered in the UK, I will SORN it. I don't intend to drive it, so it will stay parked in my driveway for 6 months. For this reason, i didn't intend to spend money on rhd headlights since I am not actually going to drive the car in the UK. I would like to ask your opinions about this. Best regards |

So, why even register it here? It's LHD, you aren't going to use it, so why bother either registering it in the Uk or getting it MOT'd?
Surely you can take it to Portugal & register it there from the German documentation? From what you've said, I really don't understand why you would want to do anything at all with the car as regards the UK...

Hi.
The reason is the tax code in Portugal. Even used cars from EU will need to pay import tax. One f31 320 from 2014 will cost aroud 5000 euros only in import tax. However emigrants returning to Portugal are allowed to bring their car without paying import tax. Regards |

Yes you are right. Portugal is in the eu and it is against the eu free movement of goods and people.
Only the cars are taxed when imported all the other goods are free. I think when Portugal joint the EU they were allowed to keep this tax for a certain period of years to maintain the Portuguese car factories competitive with the rest of Europe. Of course this type of tax is still on today. |

And in 6 months the UK won't be part of the EU.

Is it an import tax or rather registering tax which exists in many EU countries, the worst being in Denmark well over 100%

Just to end this topic
DVA does not accept MOT documents. Had my headlights changed to UK headlights. Had my speedometer dial changed to MPH. Had my car inspected by a private garage. Documents are on the way to DVA, next step is DVLA regards Last edited by Fsimoes; 10-20-2018 at 08:29 AM.. |
