how to tell if I have M sport brakes??
On my new to me '16 328I X-Msport, I am trying to confirm that I do NOT have the M sport brakes. I looked up the VIN and think I just have the M sport package (not track package), by the slotted/dimpled rotors have confused me. Plus, the rotors look larger than my E46 M3 rotors, although I have not physically measured them.
The calipers just have BMW printed on them. I am trying to confirm if 17" wheels fit for a winter setup. In doing research, it seams that the M sport brakes do not work with a 17" wheel. Thoughts? |

They look just like the brake calipers on my 340i M Sport and I’m running 17” winter wheels. The previous owner probably added the slotted/dimpled rotors.

If they're (originally) in grey, they're not M Sport brakes. They're standard brakes.
M Sport brakes are in blue (and M Performance brakes are in other colours, but they're the same as M Sport ones). Last edited by HarryTee; 11-29-2021 at 06:54 PM.. Reason: Additional info. |

The color of the caliper is the first thing I look at, if I'm not able to run the VIN through a decoder.
Looking at the picture, those are 18" wheels, correct? If they are and you had the M Sport brakes you would have an extremely small gap between the caliper and the wheel and the brake rotor would fill in more of the space around the wheel too. I run a set of 18's in winter and a different set of 18's for autocross and in both cases the brakes almost completely fill the space inside the wheel.

The front rotor for the grey standard brakes is 340mm and it fits the 18" wheel.
There are however 2 varieties of front rotors for M Sport brakes: the 370mm and 340mm. My original 370mm rotors were too big for the 18" wheel I've got, so I had to buy the 340mm rotors to use the wheels. |

Yes, I'm aware that there are special 18" wheels that fit the bigger set of callipers and rotors, but my 18" wheels are the normal 18" wheels. |

First of all if you have an M Sport model car that means bumpers, not brakes. M Sport Brakes differ depending on the car model. Calipers can be Front 340mm/ Rear 345mm like with 328i models or Front 370mm/ Rear 345mm like with 335i/340i models. M Sport brakes are always Blue. If your brakes are grey then they are not M Sport Brakes. |

Hate talking about the F30 brakes. What you need to do OP is provide us with photos and will let you know what you have.
There is the M-sport trim brakes with P377A designation...consist of gray 4pot 340mm front and single caliper 330mm rear. Then there is the M-sport blue brakes 370mm front and 345mm rear, I think this is for track handling package but was offered separate on later models. ( Similar to m-performance brakes). The 340mm front and 345mm rear is offered on the 2 series. So many thread for this And also Turner motorsport.com got a faq on this |

Good god guys he has a fucking 328i NOT a 335 or 340. READ
If his brakes are blue they're the upgraded brakes. This is VERY SIMPLE. Stop over complicating it.

The M Sport brakes most people talk about are blue, 4 piston 340mm rotors in front, 2 piston 345mm in back. If you have the grey in front I bet you have the 1 piston in the rear, doesn't look as nice as the caliper in front, yes? That being said, the M Sport blue brakes share the same front caliper as what you have right now, the only difference is that it's painted blue. That's it. If in the future if you ever wanted to retrofit it all you could just buy the blue calipers for the rear and repaint your fronts to match the rear. |

Wrong. The OP’s question was answered by me in the third post in the thread. 17” wheels will work. Just like they do on my car.

Lolllll Lolllll.
You can take off the wheel and measure the rotor diameter. Since the caliper is Grey they either came from factory that way, Or the previous owner (if they exist) removed the paint and left them bare. The latter is highly unlikely. It is more likely the previous owner (if they exist) took this standard brake package off a 6cyl car and fitted it to your 328. So let's go with the former. You do not the typical "Msport" brake package. Those are always painted (blue), and like above CAN be in 340/345, or 370/345. There is no way to confuse the rears with any other package as the calipers are completely different. There are many variants of the front, your unpainted, blue (also on f8x stock), and (red, yellow, orange labled "MPerformance"). These all have the same 4pistons and only differ by the paint, and the length of the integrated caliper mount. All are a single piece of aluminum. If you can just look at the stamp on the back of the caliper. It will tell you the rotor sizes it will support. There are countless threads about this so pick one and read for more detail. Note: never buy F8x stock breaks at a premium. It's the same part number for us just a different application. And to make things more complicated you will have users like me who took Grey unpainted fronts, and the 2piston rears, then powdercoated them . Moral of the story look at the back of the caliper if you can.

The rear calper gives it away, 2 piston = M sport brakes:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=03_0108 The wheels fitting the calipers are mentioned too
