In desperate need of help diagnosing my car

I am in desperate need of some help with my car! I have an ‘06 325i, I have never had any issues with it until several weeks ago when I stopped at a store and when I came out the car would not start, the engine would turn over but would not start. I tried several times then I let it sit and it started when I tried again about 30 minutes later. This never happened again until last week. I stopped and when I got back in the car and tried to start it I was getting the same thing, where the engine turns over but will not start. I called a mechanic that I know and he asked me if my fuel was low, it was, so I walked to a gas station with my can and the car started right up after putting the fuel in the tank. So the same evening I went to the grocery store and when I come out the same thing happened but this time there was plenty of gas in the car. I didn’t know what to do. I am currently facing some pretty extreme hardship and I don’t have anyone that I can call. So I ended up being stranded in my car overnight. In the morning I was able to charge my cell phone and I called a mobile mechanic with the hopes of diagnosing the problem. When the mechanic arrived he jumped my car because the battery died from me trying to start it so many times but the car started right up when he jumped it. He told me that my fuel pump was bad. I figured I’d get a second opinion so I had someone else come out and they also said that the fuel pump was bad. So, I used my last money to purchase a fuel pump and have it installed, but the car still would not start after installing the new fuel pump. However, the car started several hours later but now the check engine light is on, the car has a very strong sulfur smell, and it is running very rough. I had the code read and it said that Cylinder 4 was misfiring, although I knew that this is not was what causing the car to stall I knew that I would need to take care of it so I sold some things and purchased an ignition coil and had it installed. I had someone else come out to diagnose the car and he said that the only thing it could be was the Crank shaft position sensor, I am honestly desperate, I am currently driving for Uber and Lyft and that is how I make a living so I haven’t been able to work since this has happened. So I purchased the part and had it installed but the car still will not start! The times that I am able to start the car, I can turn it off and I’ll be able to turn it back on immediately but if it let it sit for a few minutes it will not start. The mechanic who installed the crank shaft position sensor stayed and played with the car for a while, he put some spray into the air box tool (not sure if I heard him correctly on that) and the car started right up but immediately turned off. He checked the fuel injectors and he says that fuel is getting there just fine. I am out of money and I need my car running has anyone had this happen, does anyone have any advice?

Wow. I haven't owned my BMW long enough to experience all the problems and issues. Wish I can help diagnose your car. Umm.... I can make a small monetary donation to you; that's how much I love this BMW community. Do you have a PayPal account?

You might get more responses on the E90 forum: http://www.e90post.com/forums/index.php which covers the year and model of your BMW.

Based on your description, it could have been the Crankshaft Sensor OR the Camshaft Position Sensor. Both cause similar symptoms and trigger the Check Engine Light. If it is a camshaft position sensor, fault code should be 2A9A, if the Crankshaft sensor, then 2A99 (P0017). How was the code read for Chyl # 4 misfiring and with what device?

There are allot of bmw independent mechanics in the Atlanta area that could lend help at reasonable costs, especially when compared to the dealer. Might want to take it or have it towed to one?

Trying to fix a car without proper diagnostic procedure often leads to the situation where your replacing parts w/o really verifying the old part is bad.
Asking tow truck drivers or non ASE mechanics or a non BMW specialist for opinions can be expensive.
Sometimes a dealer and their warrantied parts can be the most proficient way.

Routine maintenance is very important; oil changes to prevent sludge from fouling combustion. Clean air filters for breathing, an ignition system serviced at the manuals recommendation.
Frm your description it is hard to diagnose a fix. Car mileage, where your parts were sourced from, battery strength, fuel filter age and OBD on board computer code retrieval. Catalytic converter clogged and as mentioned earlier the crank angle position sensor and even gas cap can all cause issues as you describe.
Hope you get better and more responses
