The tax is a total rip off. If the tax was for three years it would be palatable as a lot of people change after three years and the government know this why they make it Five years is to squeeze as much as possible from the buyers of new and used vehicles. It will hit the used buyer, the ones who would like something decent but struggle with the cost.

I think you're right... I lifted that text directly from Audi's website a couple of months ago when I was on their configurator. In the (recent) OP's case the VED and first reg fee take them well clear of danger, but it's definitely caused confusion. Many different answers from dealers/sales guys too.

A lot of websites (inc the .Gov one) don't explicitly state what constitutes list price; they refer you back to the manufacturer!

So, nobody has given me a definitive answer.
Everybody is guessing or surmising.
It’s true that even the DVlA website doesn’t define what the list price of a new car constitutes.

knew someone would ask something like that.

I'm not against losing the child benefit for 'high earners'. But I really hate how badly it was applied. It was an easy win for the government because higher earners can't complain without sounding bad.

But I earn over the threshold, and my wife stays at home to look after the kids. Our total household income is a lot less than two earners just below the threshold but they still get full child allowance. Why not just abolish child benefit completely and add a small amount to the child tax credit which takes into account complete household income?

ok, rant over, I feel a bit better now

You can enter the 12 digit number from your V5 onto the Gov site and it will advise you on if your car qualifies.

New it was coming so bought a stock car on the 31st March 2017. Lucky the 335d I bought had nearly all extras plus performance pack. So happy days.
Not sure what this tax is for. I think they should encourage people to drive newer cars so reduce emissions, then tax the older less efficient cars higher.

I’m thinking of ordering a new car but it’s as I said in my original post, i May go over the £40K by a few hundred ££ because of the first year road tax.
If I have to pay the £340 I would order more extras but if I don’t I will keep it at the spec I am happy with on the configurator.
Thanks.

Errrr. All this talk of 5 years is wrong.
Its 6 years (max).

From DVLA:

"You have to pay an extra £310 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000.

You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed)."

So when you buy new, its at mmmmmm. £450.
Then at a year old, you pay £450, for the next 5 years.

With 20:20 hindsight, what I should have done is cashed in my tax at month one, then, although I would still pay £450 x 5, I would at least get some back!

That's not correct, it is still based on emissions, this is just an extra tax.

You just don't see the emissions as it's now all charged in the first years tax, which is wrapped up in your on the road price. An M3 has a massive first year tax bill, compared to a 320i, all due to its emissions.

Basically, it was the government improving its cash flow in one easy measure. All the emissions tax for the next 5 years is paid upfront on every new car.

When I specced my M240 i could go to £40.499.00. This would have been the price of the car with all add on such as number plates etc. But excluding the first year road tax. which was £500. hence £499.00.

As my car ended up being more than £40k it wasn't an option. So just deduct the first year reg fee from the total to see if you come under £40k

I have just spoken to a dealer who informs me that it is the first year road tax and new car registration fee that can be deducted from the on the road price of the car.

Trouble is sailing so close to the wind, is if BMW put the list price of the car up (or options) between the time you order and the time you receive the car - it could push it over.
Its a gamble.

No guessing at all. The list price of a car does not include first year road fund, delivery charges, registration and number plates. It does include options of course.

In general you can take £800 to £1200 off the on the road price to get the rating for your second and susequent year road fund tax.

I think it's based on invoice bottom line. So the price should remain firm.

Sorry as above number plates and delivery charges are not included either -- tell him that or he's a broadbrush twit.

One of the reason I sold my RS4 next year it will be near £600 a year to tax. Sick of the possibility government putting stuff up.

It is on list price not invoice.
That's why I went for f31 335d and not g31 520d SE because list price was 40.025 and road tax and insurance was more less same.

£ 310 extra if list price is over 40k, then tesla owners must pay up as well..

With a 335d and an M2 thats £900 (I'm good at maths me)

And it's not even hypothecated so non if it goes to sort out sodding pot holes.

I just paid £830 for the first year road tax, next year that drops to £450 and stays there for 5 years, unless they decide to change that again.

No, you're right. First year is usually higher, all the old emissions tax charges are collected on first registration for all cars. Flat rate from then on.

Its already gone up for next year - the surcharge goes up £10 for the £40k bracket from April 19.
