OEM or Aftermarket parts after collision?

So I hit a deer last week and my deductible is $1000. Insurance estimated the damages to be around $4400 and after deductible, they will give me $3300. My car is 2013 with about 53,000 miles on it and it's FBO.

Question is, would/does OEM or aftermarket parts make any difference? The visual damage seems to be (Hood, grills, front bumper, driver side headlight assembly).

$4400 damage minus $1000 deductible ..they give you $3300. Wtf what happened to the $100 is that processing fee.

I did aftermarket before but not on BMW. There is 2 kind of aftermarket, OEM or modified.... OEM will fit properly. I can't say about modified.

If you asking if an OEM part will have a better fit and be better built than a Papier-mâché backyard special that my 10 year old son made and I sold on ebay, then the answer is yes.

I'd do OEM. Unless you have a lot of spare time on your hands, I'd just take it to a reputable body shop and have them handle everything with OEM parts. You could try to find clean OEM used parts or research some good aftermarket parts suppliers, but that could take a lot of time for really not that much money saved.

Is the payout you quoted for all OEM parts? Was $$4400 a quote you got from a good body shop? Make sure your insurance company isn't trying to lowball you. Often, they give you a lowball offer and hope you'll take it. Make sure $4400 is enough to cover all your damages with OEM parts.

Cheaper aftermarket parts fit like crap, especially body parts.

Used, as in junkyard sourced. I wouldn't use new factory parts on a six year old car. I can't say how your insurance company would feel about that.

The question no one asked, how long do you intend to keep car?

And what color paint?

Model and base/Sports or MSport Bumper?

What headlight options (HID, Adaptive or Halogen)

This

FYI ... factory part is called BMW parts... they usually stamp with BMW logo. What I am talking about is most car manufacturers only keep OEM with they're logo for only 5 years after that they contract company to produce OEM quality part ( this is called OEM) but it's an aftermarket( you can find this from auto parts like o'Reilly, auto zone, pepboy). When your car is old , body shop order this part and they tell you its OEM.

Then there is aftermarket part, unlicensed parts that sometimes fit and sometimes don't.

My car was recently repaired by a certified BMW collision center using "a mix of OEM and aftermarket parts."

Whatever that means.

Im very happy with the results... and I was on pins and needles for over a month, expecting the worst. Came out perfect.

Bill Pearce Reno / GEICO

Thats all Im going to say.

Oops, bad math, $3400 I mean but I opted to instead work with the shop directly instead of me. Yeah the shop owner told em he will try to get OEM since aftermarket parts dont fit proper sometimes

The quote was based on pictures I sent to my insurance (Farmers), this is just something to begin with, if there is further damage, they will cover that too but this all seemed to be coming from some local shops around here so not OEM but aftermarket. I think some insurances wont do OEM but the goal is to get all OEM.

Yeah the only issue with that is to find all those parts around here and who would even have the time to park the car at a shop for a month you know, like it's just more hassle.

That is new information and very interesting, I didn't know this part. My goal is to get the same quality parts that my car came with basically that's why I was saying OEM but yeah basically I'd want everything BMW stamped, now whether the insurance will cover it like that or not, that's a while different story.

Yeah my only thing is whether the things would fit proper or not, the shop, although told me that he is going to order both OEM and aftermarkets and whatever doesn't fit properly, he is going to send pics to insurance and get approval on OEM and install those because I doubt if insurances cover everything OEM.

Don't underestimate junkyards as parts sources. They're not mom and pop operations anymore. Wrecks with desirable parts, and that means BMW, are torn down, the salvageable parts inventoried and catalogued, entered on a national database that junkyards use to find anything they want, coast to coast.
