Potential return to BMW
Hi guys. It's been about 4 years since my last BMW (2007 335i coupe). I'm thinking of returning to the fold with a 2014 335i xdrive. The car has 38k miles and comes with a fairly comprehensive 12month/12k mile warranty.
What is the general consensus on the N55 engine? I have read many contradictory accounts. My 2007 335i coupe was about 4.9 0-60 (4.6 after the COBB AP). If I remember correctly, it was in the mid to high 13s in the 1/4 mile at just over 100 mph ( I live pretty close to Capital raceway in suburban Washington DC). Will this car be better, similar or worse in terms of straight line performance? Thanks in advance for your replies. |

N55 engine per say doesnt have many problems its other compartments such as OFHG and VCG almost always will need a replacing around the 50-60k mile mark. other than that if you are staying stock you should be golden. the N54 has a forged crank as far as i know which allows it i guess take more abuse then a n55 engine on a stock block, n55 has good components that the n54 lacks as well. n55 is still in its early stages of becoming big power monsters, so it depends on ur budget, it will be cheaper to build a n54 track car than it would to build a f30 but its personal preference.

N55 won't hit the insane HP numbers that N54 did as easily. N54 is twin turbo with a closed deck while N55 is a twin-scroll with open deck.
However, you can easily reach the numbers of your previous car with just a tune. Beyond that, FBO with a Stage 2 tune will put around 400whp and a ~4 sec 0-60. There are turbo upgrade available as well to go even further. |
