That is wild! I take it you drive infrequently? And did they show you any evidence of it?

Apparently a number of owners have experienced damaged wiring as rats are attracted to the soy-based insulation. I've read of some examples on the forums where dealers have been helping with repair costs.

This. My moms old X6 had mice living in the headliner. They were attracted to the soy. It required removal of the headliner, a full cleaning, and then replacing the wires they had eaten. I think the dealership covered it, but that doesn't sound right. It would be insurance.

Rats are not covered by warranty. However, you can purchase pet health care insurance for them.

I had chewed wires in the right rear wheel well. Covered by insurance minus my deductible.

I found rat paw prints in my engine compartment as well. They often hide in the car because it's warmer in the engine compartment. It's pretty common (at least where I live). My friend's S2K has a shitton of rat shit in the intake box and the rats chewed on the CAI filter as well...

This happened to me. Rat chewed threw one of the engine harnesses and dug into the firewall. Caused like $8000 in damages and they had my car for a month. Warranty doesn't cover it, but comprehensive on your insurance policy does. I paid $100 deductible.

I had mice chew through the rubber gaskets on the plastic engine cover and then through a couple wires on the engine. The whole wiring harness needed replaced. Comprehensive Insurance covered it. I drive my car everyday so needless to say I was surprised to find that.

Yea, this is due to dumb government regulation that require all hire harnesses to be bio degradable

When I took my car into an independent repair shop for an oil change the mechanic showed me the mice footprints on my engine cover.

I have to park outside so this is gonna be an issue. Is there any type of rat repellent spray we can use in the engine bay or wheels?

Thought this might be relevant... pardon the horrendous photo quality, but if you look closely that's a damn mouse on my steering column. This is from a while ago before I had garage space and had to park outside. Luckily this little guy didn't do any damage, just gave me a good jump scare when I sat down and he was starting at me. I guess mice have an affinity for BMWs.

This happened in my last car... twice. I ended up zip tying a metal parmesan shaker to my engine bay and stuffing it with new dryer sheets every other week and surrounding my car port with boxes filled with rat poison. I'm terrified it's going to happen to my new car. If anyone has any better solutions, I'd love to hear them.

Just experienced this. My E46 is parked in my carport, I rarely drive and its been having electrical issues. A few days ago I saw a mouse run under the car, my dogs were checking the engine bay but it ended up escaping to my garage. A day later, I turned on the car, put my cat in the garage and my dog caught it as it left.

Rats, squirrel, rodent..not sure

Something got into my engine compartment while I was away on holidays. When I returned and started to drive I immediately noticed my engine light was on, took it into the shop, they called me and said "you have a rodent issue" and sent me these pictures.

Insurance is covering it, I just have to pay the deductible. I'm just wondering if anyone has ideas about traps or sprays so it doesn't happen again?
