i-step upgrade guidance

Hi guys

Got an 11/13 F30 330d. The DME has been remapped. I've gathered the parts to do an LCI climate panel retrofit but I need to upgrade my i-step in order to be able to introduce the IHKA3 ECU to my FEM. I obviously don't want to upgrade the DME or DSC as this will remove the remap.

My question is: can I update FEM and FEM_BODY but ignore the rest so that I can code IHKA3 in the future, or do I have to upgrade all ECUs (including the DME) and would forefit the map?

The car was mapped before my ownership and I have no way of restoring it, unfortunately. I could obviously get it mapped again, but I don't believe the climate retro is worth that cost.

Thank you

Yes. You can flash individual modules alone.

Hi, I know that I can flash modules individually; I specifically mean will I have any issues running mixed i-step versions across modules? I.e, only FEM_GW and FEM_BODY on newer i-step, or all ECUs on the newer i-step except DME, DDE and EGS (which would remain on my existing version).

From what I can see online, it's always recommend to upgrade all ECUs with the same version.

You can look up the prerequisites for the module in the svt tal. This the modules that ideally should be in the same I level.

Ah, I did not know that.

I've checked the FEM_BODY prerequisites and it's pretty much every entry (all minus 7). The DME is specifically called out.

Looks like my options are:

Do nothing and rule out LCI climate panel.
Run mixed i-step on only FEM_GW & FEM_BODY and risk it.
Run mixed i-step on all ECUs but DME & EGS and risk it.
Forfeit the map and upgrade all ECUs.

I have yet to ultimately decide. I'm sticking with doing nothing so far, as that's the easiest option for now.

Thanks for your responses, TheNine90.

You start checking which ilevel you are currently on. If ilevel actual is newer then you can mix. If its old you better flash all together.
You can try FEM only, if you feel something off then flash the rest expect powertrain modules.

Why would you need to update car because of IHKA3??
Just replace ihka with ihka 3 and panel would be enogh and some coding for colour changing.

I checked this already and I needed to update it based on the instructions posted in the various threads. I will probably go the FEM only route.

Because all of the instructions I can find state that the car needs to be on a newer i-step? I'm currently on 11-13-502 which is the factory shipped version. If this is not the case, then please elaborate?

I'm not new to flashing, just new to BMW.

Excellent! I shall try it without updating. Thanks for confirming.

I assume you still had to move the CAN wires on the IHKA and FEM harnesses?

Got the LCI panel and IHKA3 working with no i-step upgrades.

Parts used:

IHKA3 ECU - 64116820235
Climate panel - 64119363546

To swap the IHKA ECU:

Remove the kick panel and glovebox. There are plenty of resources out there covering this. Remove the two connectors on the IHKA ECU. Push down on the retaining tab then pull the IHKA ECU out towards you.

The IHKA ECU is located here, on top of the blower housing. Note that the ECU is removed in this picture - thus the small void and two disconnected harnesses.

To access the FEM and do the wiring:

Remove the kick plate by pulling upwards.
Remove the trim piece covering the FEM by pulling on the trim towards the inside of the car. There are 3 plastic pins to pop out.

The wiring itself wasn't that bad to do. The space is a bit tight to do soldering (couldn't use helping hands) but I made it work.

Here's the A173*10B harness and plug showing the KCAN2 pair - pin 10 (yellow-red- removed) alongside pin 11 (yellow-brown):

Here's the A173*10B harness with the plug separated, showing the position of the KCAN twisted pair (pin 33/green and pin 34/green-orange):

I performed a soldered T splice going towards A173*10B pins 10 and 11. I then terminated IHKA pins 22 and 23 (formerly connected to A173*7B) in their place. My heatshrink had rotted in storage and it was too late to go and get any, so forgive the insulation tape.

I wired with the white cable to make it blindingly obvious to anyone that ever looks at the FEM that retrofit work has been performed.

Here's the final wiring:

It's a tight space to work in but the job is done and the joints are strong. I will go back in with some harness tape and clean it up with some labelling another time.

Prior to whipping out ESYS, the panel was mostly functional with the rear demister LED flashing. The AC button was also dead. I have recorded these behaviours here if they may help someone understand what's going on in the future. You just need to (flash and) code the ECU depending upon your ECU's detected state. As Siki78 stated; no i-step upgrade is needed.

I had to flash the IHKA3 ECU as there was no CAFD present so I was unable to VO code it.

I initially had challenges flashing it (receiving error "ERROR SVK-ist does not match expected SGBMIDS for ECUId: IHKA3") but then found the "HW-IDs from SVTactual" option when generating the SVT target. Be sure to also select an i-step higher than your factory shipped version, and one instead with the IHKA3 ECU present (I went for 07-14-500). Calculate the SVT target, click the "HW-IDs from SVTactual" button, then click save. This enabled me to flash it successfully.

Once flashed, I could code the ECU and everything worked perfectly. I did not write any FA changes to any ECUs or the VCM. Simply activate the FA and work with it all in memory.

Started the engine up and the AC stopped flashing after a minute or two of idling. I then coded the Display-Farbumschlag option to AKTIV to enable the white/amber switching at high brightness levels.

Next was connecting the Y harness for the surround lighting. You must have the cupholder LED to use this harness and the brightness must be over halfway for the surround LEDs to come on.

All done! Thanks to Siki78 for confirming the i-step upgrade is not required.
