Car For My 17 Year Old
Hey Guys,
Struggling to come to terms with myself. My son who is 16 as of now has grown up and driven with his permit in my M5 since September and through my expertise , in my opinion is better then 99% of drivers on the road, which honestly isn't saying much. He's done the BMW Teen School and the instructors cound'nt stop commenting on how well he drives and races around a track not even having a year under his belt. With that being said, I cant decide what to buy him as his first car. A F30, F32 or F82. Any feedback would be great, keep in mind he will be driving 20 miles everyday to a Prep school. Money isn't really an issue, as I know none of these cars are cheap, and neither is insurance and gas for the F82. Im really hesitant to buy him an F82 but its all he talks about and has delivered A's as I asked and is truly mature, im just worried he will go showing off to his friends and or his girl friend and end up killing himself.

Get him an f30 328/335 for now for a first car, 4 doors a nice trunk room for his friends and anything he'd need for school, good on gas, insurance will be high no matter what you get him at 16. See how he does with that for a couple of years then re evaluate something more powerful once he has more road experience. None of us know your son but to put a 16yr old in a new f82 M car by himself and his friends could be a big liability. That's a lot of car for a new driver. Cool dad tho for sure

F32 for a couple reasons, gives him something to aspire to later on (F82) which I think is very important, everyone needs the high school beater to reflect on one day. Might be less to insure, might keep him out of a little more trouble. Growing up I could hoon the heck out of anything, and at some point he will.
You can have all the training you want in the simulator with dad (your M5), but when he's out there alone in the saddle he's gonna get the itch to push it at some point lets be honest. So you just set how fast/hard you'd like him to be able to when you aren't around. Also- if all he's ever heard his entire life growing up is how expert of a driver he is (in these controlled environments) he might be more apt to show off his 'expert' skills. |

i would suggest something with awd just to have that extra safety net. Not to mention on rainy and snowy days he will have less of a chance of being stranded somewhere. NJ gets lots of snow and rain so thats something i would take into consideration

2 series! M235 or 228i is up to you. I would get him the m235. The car was made for the younger crowd to start off and then let him make his way up to a 4 series or M4

I like this idea. Also an E90/92 M Sport. Or, the idea I like most, find a really good E46 ZHP. You can send him to college in an F30. No F80/82. Even an 18 year old doesn't need to be in an F8x. Let him have something to aspire to.

I come from Beverly Hills and the kids who have gotten fast cars are the ones who tend to get into stupid car accidents. I'm very thankful that my dad got me a VW CC as my first car and at the same time didn't like it because the car was very shitty and unstable. I would recommend getting him a f30 335 because they are plenty fast and I don't think he would be needing any more power than that. Their is a video on youtube of a kid in my school who was doing a canyon run and he T-boned a limo at the top of the hill in his 3 series.

There really isn't a huge acceleration difference between a 335 and an M3. I don't think one is safer than the other. If money isn't an issue, may as well get the one he wants between those two.
That being said, I'd go with a 528. They're nice vehicles, and the desire to drive it crazy would be lessened. I had a friend that got the slowest 5 series as a high school graduation present. Even though all of us less fortunate were jealous (I drove a ford escort), my friend hated his 5 series, but it was a safe vehicle for a teenager. |

Teen boys aren't generally mature enough to cope with the power available with powerful cars. Once out of your presence and in the company of girls, they will be far more daring than you think - their finely honed driving skills notwithstanding. Thinking back, there's no way I'd be able to help myself but redline my averagely powerful 335i at every opportunity.
I'd respectfully suggest something much more modest, like a Hyundai Getz.

Brand new car for a 17 year old. Never. The 17 year old mind is not fully developed to make proper decision on anything. A first time driver needs a beater car. Buy him a 4 door older generation BMW preferably with a 4 cylinder. Just my opinion.

I think its insane even thinking about buying him an F82 not to mention dangerous, maybe a 420i m sport if you really need to buy him a new BMW, still looks good and is more than fast enough, you can get in all kinds of trouble in an F82 real fast

Or grow up and be a parent. I don't care how well he drives or how responsible he is. A BMW for a 17 year old is reward enough. IMO you've already set a bad precedent sending him to a race track and giving him a taste of an M5 at such a young age. Sorry to be harsh, but Jesus. 320i. |

I would suggest leaving the new M3/M4 as a college graduation present. How about a nice 320i xDrive? Sport package and give him a few thousand to modify it to how he wants it (rims, body kits, etc...).
My first car as a teenager was a Hyundai. |
