395 miles was the OBC estimated range to empty from a full tank, and now it reads 221 miles after 4 days of 21 miles round trip ?

Range to empty can vary hugely based on traffic conditions. I've also found that OBC estimated range to empty from a full tank has massively decreased after a BMW software update - it used to read ~480 miles, now typically <400miles. My actual range from a full tank is typically 450-470 miles and 37mpg.

I have a Costco about 2 miles from my house, which has just had a fuel station added.

The price for their premium diesel is incredible (Yesterday was 1.11.9 p/l), which on a fill up is about £10 per tankful cheaper than Shell V Power.

Anyone else using this fuel & how do you rate it?

My first E90 had been run on cheap supermarket fuel (I think) and also by me for the first couple of fill ups. The engine was so noisy it was almost embarrassing taking passengers in an expensive car.

Having read some of the discussions on the forums, i tried my first tank of BP Ultimate. The difference was unbelievable, I mean, just driving out if the petrol station I could feel a difference. Felt like a different car.

I put in the odd tank of V power now and again, but generally just use Shell diesel. Shell fuel is almost a cheap as that in the supermarket, but the difference in smoothness and power of the car is noticeable. V power is slightly smoother when driving but no real MPG gains. Not enough for me to use it all the time, considering the cost.

My conclusion is that just using Shell/BP is the best compromise.

BP Ultimate & Shell V Power Diesel are both 55 cetane. Higher than other diesel fuel in the UK.
However BP contains less sulfur which is better for the Dpf and helps to keep it cleaner.

I were in Scotland and had no choice but to run 'Gleaner' standard diesel in my remapped 435d and it sounded awful after about 50 miles of running it. When I used all the fuel, on my way back home I put a full tank of BP Ultimate in and again after 40-50 miles the engine sounded perfect again. This was not a placebo effect either.

When I was running my 330d, I'd take some Millers with me, for when I had to fill with 'Gleaner' up in the north west.

Same reason, awful clatter and less mpg without the Millers additive.

A couple of factors outwith the fuel itself.
First, you could have filled while averaging a good consumption, (remember it is a rolling calc, not the previous long term average), giving you a good anticipated range.
Second, have your average ambient temperatures dropped, (they have up here)? That will knock mpg in the diesel, whatever the fuel.

Yes that's right, I had the same clatter with that fuel. I had never heard of Gleaner before. I will know if I go again to take some suitable additive/cetane booster with me.

Gleaner is a supplier up here, one problem is how long the fuel sits in some of the tanks in remote locations. Plus the cetane value deteriorates.

Never even thought of that, it were up in Isle Of Skye so were very remote up there yes.

I normally used esso regular and then 1in4 with either esso supreme or sometimes shell v power. Finally found a bp station that has diesel ultimate; I’ve run best part of a tank through and I can say it’s not the placebo effect; the car is running quieter than previously

I used to own a Peugeot 306 HDi, which I did lots of dynos on, g-testing (for before/after compares etc), and subjective testing.

It was an early common rail engine, but arguably bullet proof and really nice to tune.

These diesels never gave any quantative gains that I could see.

However they did improve the sound and remove a lot of clatter.
But I also felt the response was softer somehow.
At the time when diesel and petrol were a fortune, the premium just wasn't worth it, and at the time de-EGR/de-cat was a thing so no need to worry about those being cleaned.

I did run proper branded fuel though.

Sainsbury's Super for petrol (BP super supplies, but at a small premium), or Shell normal diesel were my faves.

In a previous life I had a 1st generation Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi that covered 107k miles before entering into BMW ownership. I never trust supermarket fuels, so it was always filled up with Shell, BP or similar, but mainly BP. I decided to try the BP Ultimate Diesel mainly to keep the engine cleaner and reduce the amount of smoke coming out the exhaust. Although the fuel was around 5% more expensive than normal BP diesel, I got around 10% better mpg out of it, and a cleaner engine to boot. Still smoked like a chimney when accelerating hard though...

I'm going to do some testing on diesels mostly to see if there is a gain in mpg enough to justify the price alone.

If there is it's a no brainer.
