b58 bootmod3 max cooling setting

hey guys,

Just wondering everyones thoughts on the bootmod3 max cooling setting... i live in canada so the winters can get very cold but the summers can reach up to 30-35 degrees celcius.

(stage 1 340i no bolt ons)

questions:

1) are there any cons or risks in using the max cooling setting on bootmod3 year round?

2) do any of you use this setting and have any comments on it?

thanks in advance

1) No, it works only, when needed.

2) Yes, on stage 1 93. Not much to comment, though. According to the oil temp gauge, the temperature is slightly lower while pushing the car for longer period (as spirited driving up to the mountains, or longer summer highway journeys in speeds above 120 mph). Otherwise, no change.

Would this make it take longer for the car to get up to temp?
I enabled it and went for a drive yesterday and It seemed to take longer.
May just be me though.

from what i know this bootmod option, should activate the pump to always on, instead when reaching a certain temperature.

so yes it takes longer to reach temp.

not sure if this mode is good for the pump !!

Max cooling has almost nothing to do with oil. Once your engine is at temp the coolant pump is almost always running anyway. On b58 engines the benefit Max cooling is in reference to your secondary water pump that controls the low temp coolant circuit for your water to air heat exchanger. Normally this pump only runs cool coolant through the system when certain temp limits are reached. With max cooling enabled it runs the pump as a circuit continuously so you don't have any intake fluctuations. I don't use it on my car as my IAT have never been a problem on a stage 2 tune... although summer is coming up and I'll have to keep an eye on it

I experienced the opposite. It lowered my engine temps but had no impact on IATs.

I had the max cooling enabled on my Stage 1 BM3 tuned 340i xDrive and noticed that I could hear what sounded like a fan running constantly. I worried it would possibly prematurely wear the part (cooling pump?) so I disabled max cooling. I no longer hear the fan or pump sound. It almost sounds like the AC fan to me, so if anyone can confirm if that is the cooling pump, that would be great too. Hope this helps!

On B58's, we have a fast warm up because our oil gets heated up by the coolant; one of the main benefits from the N55.
3:05 mark, he takes off the oil/water heat exchanger.

What are IAT's? Is there a post where all these acronyms are defined? I swear I can't read 2-3 sentences without reading some sort of acronym lol. Sorry fellas for the rant.

john_f30 got it right. When the turbo compresses your intake air, it creates a lot of heat. The hot air goes through an intercooler to cool it down. There is a sensor after the intercooler to measure the temperature, and the tune adjusts it's parameters based on the temp.

Call me skeptical, but with BMW's history of failed water pumps, I'm probably going to leave mine OEM.

"Moreover, for the B series engines this enables the intercooler pump to be active at all times to lower intake air temperatures!" - Directly from PTF/BM3

Having the pump active at all times doesn't sound good to me lol.

Mine just failed 2 weeks ago. Mechanical water pump replaced. About a couple months after the eccentric shaft was fixed. Hopefully that's it for me. Already out of warranty lol

Keep in mind a leaking water pump is different than an actual failed water pump. Typically when people talk about water pump failures, they are referring to leaking gaskets. The pump itself doesn't fail very often.

I turned mine off because I'd rather the car run at the operating temp it's designed for instead of dropping to less than 190F every time a do a pull.

Hm I wonder if the N54 boys had leaky water pumps. They seem to need to replace them every 50-60k. From what I've read, they need to replace that and thermostat everytime. I thought it was straight up pump failure.
