I too am currently looking for someone to swap 403M's. I'd most likely stick with the 8" units and swap out my 8.5"ers. I know Tx is a hike from NY but if you (or anyone else) want to explore this swap further, let me know.

Unfortunately I don't have the 403M's anymore to do any trades to make a square set. It was a long drawn out process to get all my warranty work done (negotiating between my 3rd party dealer where and bought the car and the BMW dealer for service) but I ended up having to have the car put back to "factory stock" to get the work done which meant returning the 403M's and getting 400M's. I didn't have to pay for any of it, but I lost the 19" look of the 403M's which I liked. In the end I got new wheels and new tires for free, just an 18" set.

Has anyone tried to get this replaced for free out of warranty? Mine failed at 47k and seeing as there's a strong chance it will fail again at 100k it's something that really bothers me about the car.

I don't see how it's fair to have a $6,000 job on essential a 50k mile replacement schedule.

Noticed from the spreadsheet most of the failures are happening with diesels and the 335i, could it be possible the failures are due to the increased torque? For the 328i owners who had the failure are you running any kind of performance mods or tune?

I was at the dealer just last week with this. Our original transfer case was replaced at 49K miles and we started having issues again this month which they said was the transfer case again. We are at 129K miles now and my service rep, who is a good guy, tried to get BMW NA to replace it for free since this would be #2. Due to the mileage and time between the first replacement and now they said no, but he did track down a refurbished one which would be $4K all in to replace. I think I remember that they told him like 20-30K miles is what they would replace it for free.

As it turns out it was my tires which was causing the issues. I now have all 4 the same brand, size, and tread depth with no stuttering issues.

There are at least 2 known failure modes for transfer cases, besides the "distractors" labeled as a transfer case failure, as you mentioned.

So yes, it is super important to ask what specifically failed, with proof, because the dealer's mentality is to shotgun a part before actually solving the problem. Sure, they're not paid to be investigators, but it's in your own interest to know more details.

I have already came up with a preventative method/approach (loctite output flange plus the full rubber flex disk) for the more severe failure mode, which can potentially save a lot of money for owners in long term. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1579087

Honestly doubt tires will be a long term "fix" as your quite up there in mileage on your replacement tc. When mine failed i had new Michelins all around

I've just test driven a 320DX F30 and noticed the symptoms. They called today to say the transfer unit will be replaced.

It's bang on 60k miles. I'm not sure if it's had the part replaced before but will check when I pick it up.

Got the symptoms! Booked in next week but very likely to be transfer case replacement, having to get a refurbishment as the cost is just ridiculous!

If you will pay it yourself try first if oil change helps. I have heard of many cases where a double flush oil change has cured the symptoms so it may not be too late.

Bmw has a new part number for these that is around $700. Maybe those are rebuilt cases, I don’t know. But I made a big stink about it with BMW customer relations and they contacted my dealer and they picked up the tab. They have a name for this but I forgot what they call it. Basically Corporate takes a loss sometimes for the good of customer relations.

It was definitely a part number for the entire transfer case. My rep indicated that as far as he knew, it was basically the same part as before, but the price was now around 700 instead of 2500 or 3000.

Are you sure? i'm looking at real oem,

i see two part numbers

07/2015+ 27108643149
and the latest being 27108643150

Both being around $4100, i don't see how i could possibly drop to $700, if so i'll buy a couple of them

Oh I am sure. Unfortunately this was quite a few months ago and I don't remember every detail, but I do remember the gist of my conversations with the service manager. At first he did say that the price of these transfer cases were around $3000. Definitely not $4100 but maybe you are looking at retail pricing and not dealer cost? My Service Manager said all along he would not mark up the price from his cost as he felt bad that this was my 3rd transfer case at only 50k miles... After I told him that $3500 or whatever was too much money, he went away for a while and finally came back and told me that actually there is a new part# for only around $700. Yes, I did feel that this was very fishy. He did show me some number either on a screen or on a printout that listed the part an the new low price. He had a bunch in stock. Funny how he didn't know this earlier, but I didn't bring that up. He said that he didn't know about this new low price and it must be because BMW had to make a ton of them because everyone is having problems with them. This made sense to me. I'm convinced that no matter what lies he may have told me, there was indeed a new low part# from BMW. He did show me something that verified his claim. Indeed I was happy and would have paid it if not for the fact that at the same time I was waiting for a call back from BMW corporate. Try to call BMW NA and ask for their customer relations department and tell them my story. See if they can help you out!

I have the receipt at home in my car file. I'll check it tonight to see if the recent has a part number on it.

Last summer I got my new one for $600, so it's possible. But the current price is still high. Their price fluctuates with stock and incentives, it seems.

Careful, ***149 and ***150 are different, in terms of output flange bolt circle diameter.

I bought a new one for $650 shipped about a year ago. Price has quadrupled on that part number though. $2700 or so last I checked. For $650 it was worth replacing over rebuilding.

Edit: the place I picked it up from still has it listed at $2700, but it has been on backorder for quite some time. Places with it in stock are more like $4000

It is amazing how this part is fluctuating between $650 and $4000.

As I stated earlier, my dealer told me he had a new part# that he claimed was the exact same part, only it was $700. ANyway I looked up my receipt and sorry, there are no prices on my receipt. As I styated earlier since I made a big stink with BMW NA, the dealer did the enetire swap for free even though my car was out of warranty.
My receipt says 100% no cost one time gesture, Goodwill SA 84514.

The transfer case part number is 271019 it looks like.

The only difference between part numbers 27108643149 and 27108643150 is the output flange diameter.

Up to 07/2015 the cars had part number 27108643149 with a 105mm output flange bolt diameter and flex disk.

From 07/2015++ they got 27108643150 transfer case and 96mm output flange bolt diameter to flex disk.

That was the only difference.
So your car would have gotten the 27108643149 for its 105mm putput flange to flex disk to match your driveshaft.

The other part number available for your car, 27107649725, is the core exchange version of it.

Through some light extra work, I'm looking at preventing the whole issue from coming up again. I will be monitoring the Loctite method to look for any more vibration wear, when I refresh my flex disk.
