F32 440 vs F06 650
Hey bmw friends,
I have come to a very interesting predicament of choosing a next car. I've been in love with my 428 since the day i bought it and am still in love with it today. The way it handles, sounds and overall daily drivability is just amazing after all the maintenance and mods I've done to the car. With that being said, I've finally been promoted in my job and am looking to upgrade in the next year. I've always wanted an m4, but in the recent years I realized I'll never be able to take advantage of the performance of one, and am more interested in the luxury aspects anyways since i would mainly be street driving it. In comes the 650: I test drove one today and can say that I wasn't in love with it. Granted, I don't think I was as in love with my car as I am today because I've done work on it since then, but this car in particular just didn't have that oomph, understandably since the 650 gc is more than 700 pounds heavier However, the 6's fit and finish is a league above the 4, you can get bang and olufson sound system, it's much more common to get adaptive cruise, you can have massage seats, AND ventilated, which is impossible in our f32. So that brings me to the predicament I'm in today. There are 4 main contenders: 2 650's and 2 440's. The first tier is at 35k and the second is at 40. Aside from price, I feel like I would be missing out on a lot in the 440 due to the reasons mentioned earlier. Of course you can get adaptive cruise but it's a very rare option in my research. At 40k, even more so, I feel like the 6 just gives more bang for the buck, As for maintenance, I do all the work myself. I am a fairly experienced bmw diy'er at this point as I've worked on multiple, and are around them all the time for my job. Understandably the 650 is going to be more expensive, and I have taken that into consideration but is not a main concern, purely driving experience and livability. At the end of the day, I value performance/handling the most, with luxury as a close second. I'd only be looking at a gran coupe for the 6 because at least the back seats are useful, but it's not a deal breaker. Does anyone have a similar experience in their car search?

While I've never driven a 6 series if you're looking for performance the 4 series is the better choice. The 440i with MPPSK or a stage 1 tune and it's a lot of fun. Throw in some coilovers for a tighter ride.
I was in the same boat as you and had a 430i and upgraded to a 440i. The 440i is a lot of fun to drive. Sure there is some bias here lol. |

I’d end up modifying both anyways so it’s not like I’d miss the power from the v8 vs i6, but just thinking of overall package

What year is the 650i? The N63 is a dog to maintain especially earlier variants. The 440i will undoubtedly be more reliable. It'll also handle a bit better since it's smaller. The 650i is purely a luxury car, unless you get an M6.

They're a bit better. Personally, if I was looking at a 6 series, I would probably just grab an M to avoid reliability issues. Even though the S63 track record isn't that great.

I love the 6er. I’ve never been a huge fan of the 4er tail light design.
Of course, the 650 is a totally different animal from the 440. Have you seen this listing? It’s up here in Chicago, but I know the guy who’s selling it. https://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2029965

I say stick with the 440i (not biased at all). For me personally the 650 just seems way too long, land yacht/boat style car. I'm assuming with that budget the 650's you would be looking at would be older, 15-16 so most likely with the old iDrive, etc. Going the 440 route would bring the newer idrive, technology, etc.
With your last statement, if you want a performance-tilted gran coupe with some luxury, go with the 440i. As you said you will feel the power difference, more so with handling as well. |

So my search finally concluded last Saturday. I went with a left field choice and picked up a 2017 750li.
It has all the features from the 6 that I wanted, and it’s now only a generation old. Funny story, I was this close to ending my search just a week before that after looking at multiple cars across the country, dealing with multiple shady dealers, cars being sold under me and the lot. I flew out to Georgia the first week of April to look at an impala red 650, and I wanted to love it so bad. For some reason I just couldn’t get the deal to make sense. It was listed for 25.9, 3 owners, 58k miles and had everything I wanted but the wear and tear were starting to show and I wasn't a fan of the dealership either. For a grand less, I came across the 7 I ended up purchasing out in California. Almost completely optioned out, with a 121k original msrp, 2 owners, 57k miles and lived in cali it's whole life, it was an amazing score. This car is a beast and I'm going to miss being in such a nimble car, but that's why I've got my 1er too Say hello to Giulia

Ventilated seats are definitely not a gimmick, to whoever said that. They are a huge benefit to those of us who enjoy 100+ degree summers. I can't speak for the massagers but I sure am missing the vented seats from my prior car in my 335

Completely get that. the f36 imo has poor visibility, especially in the rear window and that's why I wouldn't have even considered it.
