N20 Grinding Buzzing sound at certain RPM (chain replaced)
Hi All,
For the longest time I have this weird sound from engine bay that occurs from 2100RPM and above. More pronounced when cold, revving stationary, or when engine braking when throttle is released on downhill. Its not wastegate, I already fixed that and buzzing from it is different than sound on video. New chain, new plugs, new injectors (different clicking noise not injectors). On the video at around 7 second mark noise starts. Cant determine for sure from what side of engine its coming, but more likely from the back of it, don't know. Could this be some kind of heatshield rubbing or AC hose resonating? Any help or idea to what to look would be great at this point. Save Share Reply Quote |

When was the timing chain replaced? Did this noise start right after that? Was there any timing chain noise before? Did they replace the chain guides? The chain tensioner? The oil pump/chain?

It was replaced around 24k miles ago. Everything is replaced on front, I checked when I bought the car, and I can see new guides from oil fill hole.
I had this sound for a long time, probably from when I bought the car, but didn't noticed it right away. It sounds like something on the right of the engine, towards throttle body area more likely. |

I hope someone else can chime in. There is definitely something going on at certain rpms I am not familiar with the details of the turbo, can be turbo related? Alternator? Water pump?

Yes it starts at certain RPM and sound stays the same, its not changing, faster or slower, just becomes less obvious with engine sound.
I have taken off belt once to isolate that, and sound is still present, so its not related to pulleys. Turbo is in good condition with new wastegate also. |

Maybe somebody else with more knowledge than me can chime in.
It may be worth to use a stethoscope and try to narrow down the source of the noise

Check all your pullies. it sounds as if its connected to the main belt. alternator, main crank pulley, ac, etc. otherwise make sure you are running a 5-30, 5-40 oil and you aren't low.
thats my guess from this badly angled video and all the "noise" you are worried about is coming from the left if the audio is accurate.

Here is another video form the inside and you can clearly hear strange noise. Its more pronounced when releasing the throttle or engine braking, and when RPMs fall. |

Use Google Translate. Russian is not a world language.
