Thanks everyone for the input. It sounds like its probably nothing serious or impending failure lol. Will probably just check it again in 5-10k miles or every oil change.

I bumped another thread recently about a potential oil pan gasket leak, and i am most likely going into the dealer for that soon since i have about 1.5 months left on my CPO warranty. Going to mention this at the same time and see what they say, but i suspect they will just say its normal.

I finally had a non-90 degree day here and decided to install the tensioner kit. My jiggle is completely gone. I effed up part of the install though and while trying to remove the pin from the tensioner, turned it the wrong way and broke part of the cast / bent the pin. There was still enough of the cast to hold the pin when I re-installed, so I figure this is more of a convenience for installing the kit and not necessary when removing the belt.

Check out the picture. Anyone think this is important?

Please learn from my mistake! It might be time to cut back on the gym.

Sorry for the bump

But lots of great info thanks guys.

I actually just finished an oil change up yesterday on my '14 335 at 74k miles
I noticed the same juggle and sound during idle under the hood.

Consensus in the forum seems to say that this normal and is a quick and cheap enough job to just do at your own leisure.

Here is my car as of yesterday

I'll just probably wait until next oil change and replace for the hell of it.

At 75k its probably worth the DIY, yeah. You dont want your belt coming off and taking out the front main.

Checked my tensioner today, and it's jiggling again.

Mine looks the same as my "before" video i posted previously, even after BMW said they replaced it. I think some amount of wiggle is normal. Its only if you have excessive play or its making noise its an issue.

It's just strange since some of the "after" videos i saw showed it rock solid.

is the amplitude of jiggle any different? this is why i haven't done mine, just seems this is by design.

It seems exactly the same. I took a video right after install and it was completely smooth. I guess it "broke in" since then.

I replaced mine and on cold starts, it was slightly better than before. Once warmed up, no movement whatsoever

Replaced mine last summer. I ended up stripping the stupid torx hole somehow, ended up yanking the pin with pliers and brute force. It was miserable and I have zero clue what I'm going to do next time I need this replaced. Hopefully not any time soon

Noticed my jiggle in the tensioner the other day as well. Going to tackle it since it's easy and cheap.

Let us know how much of a difference it makes for you. Mine looked more or less exactly the same after dealer replaced it under warranty, but ive seen some videos where the "after" looks rock solid.

Will do. I'll try to remember and get a before and after video.

I just replaced mine a few days ago. The jiggling is noticeably less, but there is still some small level of wiggle. The old belt seemed almost new. I ensured torque specs were correct, so I'm also inclined to think that a small amount of jiggling is normal.

Hello, I picked this up a few weeks ago and heard a small squeal during LOW RPM's

I'm not sure if I need to change it right away or if I can wait a week so I can be back in montreal (in toronto currently)

I replaced my 5 y/o tensioner earlier in the year. I can't say it made any real difference in the jiggle. FYI, the tensioner will jiggle quite a bit, even new, when the air conditioner is on. The extra load of the A/C compressor really pulls on the tensioner. It might be why some hardly see any jiggling and others significant jiggling.

Mine was replaced under warranty at about the 5 year mark as well, i just brought the car in and said it looked like it was juggling more than usual (watched lots of videos) and they replaced it. If it starts making noise i would replace sooner rather than later, and probably do belt at the same time if its 5+ years old. There's a kit i believe and you can DIY.

I know this is older but definitely timeless. My tensioner does the same thing, it juggles quite a bit. And doe it’s even making a slight rattling noise as it jiggles. So I know the bearing is going out. Time to change it!
