New car has existing tune, what steps to use BM3

The title says it all...new car will have an unknown tune and I will be making mods and adding a tune I can access, either MHD or BM3.

Does the computer need to go back to an OEM tune via the dealer or is there another way to do this? TIA.

For MHD when you first install, it should save your current tune, so it just means you wont be able to revert to stock, you could only revert to that original tune that came on the car. In either case you should be able to overwrite whatever is currently on there with MHD or BM3 tune.

EDIT: I see you are in California, so having a copy of the stock tune might be important. Not sure how old the car is, but it would need stock tune to pass SMOG check, presumably before the car can be sold to you?

Dont think this is correct. Current tune will not be saved as Stage0. Stage0 is factory map based on your VIN, BUT... I might be wrong...

Car will come from out to state and likely won't be registered in CA. BUT...if the DME is unlocked I'm not sure if a different software will overwrite a "foreign" unlock. Speculation on my part....

Another possible concern. Will BM3 or MHD save as a "stock tune" when it's in fact a custom tune.

I recommend you reach out to BM3 and check if their tune is on your car.

Then based on that answer, they let you know if they can overwrite the existing map and what will happen to the custom map on the car now.

Yes, that's typically what they ask for in my experience.

Bootmod3 saves whatever tune that it finds on your car and labels it "Stock Tune" so that you can always remove BM3 and reinstall whatever tune it had previously.

This "stock tune" label causes confusion because guys dream up all kinds of false things like that BM3 actually has a library of factory stock tunes, etc. Wrong! It's only saving whatever tune it saw on the car when you first installed BM3.

My car came with the MPPK tune when I bought it so that's what Bootmod3 saved and labeled my "stock tune"

Later I actually wanted to do some comparison testing beginning with the stock factory tune (which I never had since I bought my car used)

So I contacted Bootmod3 technical support. They put together a tune for me that contained the stock parameters that would have come with my car from the factory. But it also had the BM3 section that allowed me to set my upgraded Dorch HPFP, etc. They just dropped it into the MyMaps menu on my car's Bootmod3 account.

So I could flash this Bootmod3 simulated factory stock map. Then I could flash the MPPK tune that Bootmod3 had originally saved for me and labeled "stock tune". Then I could flash any other Bootmod3 map for my car.

Hope this helps!

As the subsequent posts have stated above, when you first install MHD or BM3, it just saves whatever is on the car, so when you flash back to "stock", you flash back to that original tune. I can't comment as to whether BM3 or MHD would be able to give you a 100% OEM software for the purposes of passing California SMOG, so that might be something you need to go to the dealer or another DME coder to handle.

This does make more sense (and would be WAY easier for MHD/BM3 to manage) as compared to a database with VIN/stock maps etc etc...

Hey, been curious about this for a bit. Got my car with a custom tune done to it (A90 Supra, no brand of tune says the previous owner) do I only need the adapter or do I also need the super license for these adjustments?

Hey I’m new to all this. So I have a custom tune on my A90 supra (previous owner had it tuned) no brand of tune he stated. Anyway. So when I get BM3/MHD, “stock” or “stage 0” will be the custom tune my car has prior to installing BM3/MHD. And if so, do I only need the adapter or do I need the license as well

Bootmod3 will save your existing tune first, so that if you ever wish to, you can reflash it back to its current state.

You need to buy the Bootmod3 license.

Then it’s your choice how you connect your hardware device such as a laptop or smartphone to your car’s OBD port, either by cable or by wifi adapter

Old thread but thanks, everyone. I Ended up with a different car with a different problem...2021 M2C. It's likely a locked DME, however, the BM3 support function didn't say " bench unlock only" it shows the normal screen for a typical license.

So the car I bought has BM3 on it, if I buy a new license, which of the 4 tunes does is store as stock? The one that I currently have selected, or is one of the 4 tunes the one it saves?

The previous owner has sent the 'email' to support@protuningfreaks.com with his email used to register the license and the VIN to transfer the license to me but there has been no response. I would like to know what tunes I have on the car and make my own changes.

I don't want to buy a new license, and it save one of the OTS tunes as the stock tune, I want to flash it back to stock.
