Getting your BootMod3 used (license transfer)? Here's what to expect...

Hello gents:

STORYTIME
So like most of you, I started life enjoying the stock power of the 435i turbo 6. Even with an automatic, the car stock will put a smile on your face when you floor it. But like most car guys... somehow more could be better...

Cruising eBay I won a new, open-box Dinan Sportronic (piggyback boost module) for the laughable price of $28.26. Retail is $249/$299. So yes, I was pretty stoked. Dinan claimed "as much as 45hp and 45ft/lb torque" -ish on my N55 (kinda, if I was running 93 octane and my 435i became a 235i). But the piggyback set to 3psi (91 octane, Norcal) still got a smile out of me when I floored it.

But then... a year later, one of our fellow forum members had a JB+ piggyback for the low-price of $125 (retails at $199). Many forum members loved this little wonder, so I got it to compare to my Dinan unit. Although it had a similar range as the Dinan (0-4psi), the JB+ had a more aggressive mapping for boost that in turn made more low-end grunt all the through powerband. I was happy with this unit... for about 2 months.

EXPECTATIONS
Because I was reading up on flash tunes like the Bootmod3... I thought wow, +75hp /+84ft/tq torque for $600?! That's amazing. Being part of the ricer scene in the 90s, to get 70hp+ (at the wheels) took some serious bolt on money upwards of $1500-$3000 in intakes, exhausts, headers, chip and/or a turbo kit with moderate boost. (Is true, see my gauge photo below...)

So a forum member put up their Bootmod3 for sale... or should I say, their license. The price was a little more than half the retail ($599), but still better than $599 right?

We traded messages and I got the seller paid.

TRANSFER OF LICENSE PROCESS (for me anyway)
So here's HOW the BootMod3 transfer transpired:

1. You work out payment with the seller. I used Paypal goods/services and covered the extra 3% fee. This allows you to use your Paypal balance or bankcard and get protection in case anything happens. We don't think our fellow forum friends would do anything fishy right? Well, it happens folks. (In my case, the seller was a SUPER stand-up guy. We need more of them in the world.)

2. Once paid, the seller sent me his OBD to Ethernet data cable via the mail.

3. While the cable was on the way, I did two things:
a. Downloaded the Bootmode agent app for my pc/mac. This talks to your car.
b. Went to bootmod3.net and registered myself on their website.

4. Once the cable arrived:
a. Hooked up the battery charger to my car, *under hood*, set it to max amps of charging (You need a 26 to 30 amp charger per Bootmod3)
b. Hooked up the OBD cable to the car
c. Closed my door, put on seat-belt
d. Turned the car on, and to accessory mode (have key fob, push button, don't start car)
e. Turn off everything you can, auto lights, idrive, radio, ac/heat, etc.
f. Plugged obd cable into my PC (ethernet port on PC)
g. Started browser, logged into bootmod3.net website, and once logged in...
h. On PC started-up boot-mode agent software

At this point you will see the agent terminal screen say something like searching, hey found your car, here's the VIN

And on your browser, the Bootmod3 landing page screen will say something like found your VIN, all connected, now give me the activation code.

5. I texted the seller that I had successful made an account and logged in.
I texted my email, phone, name (first/last), VIN of my car, engine type (N55)

6. The seller starts up his computer, logs into the bootmod3 site. He enters the choice to transfer his license.
He enters the info I sent him (looks mainly like email and VIN). He then hits the submit/transfer license button.

7. Within *seconds*, I got an email from Bootmod3 people with the activation code.

8. On the bootmode screen, I enter the activation code and hit register/activate license/car.

A SUCCESS pop-up screen shows up.

Assuming your battery charger is still plugged in and charging the battery, you can now flash the car with the new tune!

-------------------------

INSTALL THE FLASH TUNE?

I HIGHLY SUGGEST reading and following the official Bootmod3 install procedure. It's a bit more detailed than my write-up below. So consider my review below as a quick-glance to help set your expectations!

(Here's the technical steps from the Bootmod3 team - https://bootmod3.atlassian.net/wiki/...mmentArea=true.

---------------------------

9. On my PC, I clicked the menu and looked up OTS maps.

10. Since my car is Norcal-based and stock, I selected the stage 1-91 octane map and hit download/get. (You see a few screens like get this map? yes/no)

11. Once downloaded, I click the see my maps under menu.
a. I see my stock map
b. I see the stage 1 map.

12. On the stage 1 map, I clicked the arrow at far right (to flash it to my car).

13. A few screens show up but "flash" in a big red button at bottom left is what I pushed. A few are you sure screens go up, I click yes.

The car makes a lot of clicking noises, the warning screens go up, but Mr. Kies at Kies Motorsports says that's normal (via a YouTube screen I had open on another laptop). A pop-up window shows downloading, installing messages and a percentage. Just sit tight, don't go anywhere. And DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.

A message will appear that says "resetting codes" and a SUCCESS pop-up window shows up at the end of the percent count-down. It says to wait at least 5 seconds before starting the car.

14. Close the browser and desktop app. Disconnect the odb/ethernet cable from your computer. Undo your seatbelt, open your door, disconnect the battery charger.

15. About 2-3 minutes will have passed - Start your car.

16. Go for drive. You'll find at less than 1/2 throttle you've hit 100mph and you are making PG-13-rated remarks about how fast the car is now.

17. Send text to seller thanking them for coming through on the sale and that you love the tune.

Hope this was helpful guys!

- - - AND THE POWER - -

This is stage 1, 91 octane, COMFORT MODE... freeway WOT
(Note gauges normally end at 320 hp and 320 ft/tq... and you might hit 300 on both stock.)

Good writeup, except you are supposed to use significantly more than 2 amps of charging while doing a write/flash for the first time, with either BM3 or MHD. You can get away with it if you have a fast flash and a good battery, but i would not risk it. I believe they indicate it draws up to 30A during the flash process, and they specifically say not to use a tender/maintainer; you need a charger. I always put my charger on 30A. Also, make sure its a charger made for AGM batteries. Also, if not obvious, only connect under the hood and not directly to the battery.

Also not explicitly mentioned, you are supposed to make sure that you turn off daytime running lights (if on), turn off all HVAC, and turn off the idrive control display.

You may be able to get away with not doing all of this, but if you want to do it "by the book", that's what youre supposed to do.

I also successfully purchased a used BM3 license. I would buy your own ENet cable for like $15 on eBay. You can do this while shopping for a BM3 license. Then move step 5 and step 6 up into where Step 2 is now. It avoids mail delays right at the point of greatest discomfort: having paid seller but not received the item of high value (BM3 activation).

MTWO - It was easy, yes!
I just wanted lower the anxiety of fellow-forum friends!

Used BM3 licenses hover at $300-$400, so it's serious money right?
On TOP of re-flashing a DME which basically can render your car dead (if it doesn't work).

You need to go play the lottery. Having found a used bm3 license makes you a very lucky person!!!

Ha ha ha ha, thanks Randy! Yeah, I have to say, it worked out. I was cruising the forums like on a Sunday afternoon and replied to the sale post within, I think 4 or 5 minutes of it going online. The seller PM'd me within the same 5 minute timeframe. So we were both online. Stars aligned nicely indeed.

Even at $595 retail for the N55 version, +60hp/+85tq is pretty amazing.
I don't think there's a single performance part out there that can give you that hammer-like gain for less.

Does the seller's license need to match up with your car's drivetrain? I've seen posts like "selling BM3 for N20", but since I have the N55 engine, I don't know if it would work. I would hope it would work since it is just a license and you could choose the drivetrain settings after registering.

oranga - generally, if the license type is the same price/family (or more), it *should* go through. In my case, the previous owner had the N26 license for an F30. I have the N55 for the F32.
