Need a little clarity N47 & B47

I feel like an idiot, and I have searched with some conflicting info. I am referring to North American cars. Is a 2014 328d RWD going to be an N47? Was 2016 the first year for the B47? Are the 2014 N47’s pretty safe from the timing chain issues it appears? Thx for the clarity!

The USA market never received B47 engine. The only B engine that we got in the US for a diesel was a B57 (6 cyl) in 2018 540d. The newest 4 cylinder diesel in the US was N47.

The US version of N47 was a technical update that included updated chain/guides that are not prone to failure like earlier EU N47 engines. They are solidly built. Mine is a 2018 with N47TU, last model year 4 cylinder diesel in the US. B47s in the EU have a few technical updates, but in the grand scheme of things, do not have anything revolutionary compared to our engines.

Okay this was a fantastic reply! Thx so much. It’s crazy how easy that was and how convoluted the info is on the internet overall.

Happy to know my 2014 328d is a solid engine without the timing chain trama since I love in the states. Thx again!

The B47 is similar to the N47 but do note that the B47 has 190hp and 400nm (295ft-lbs) instead of the 184hp and 380nm (280ft-lbs). Also the B47 is used in a mild-hybrid setup on the 320d from 2020 onwards.
