Lol agreed! I do enjoy the car so far no complaints other than getting only 25mpg due to minnesota winter weather and short commute. Seems like the only thing i have to worry about mostly would be the timing chain and if the extended warranty is confirmed then im comfortable with that.
Sounds about right. I say the same thing to myself.

The costs to fix the timing chain also seems to be about the same cost as buying the extended warranty - something to keep in mind.

I saw a decent drop this winter myself and am down to about 23-24mpg now versus 28-29mpg. Been brutally cold which has been hard on it.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the timing chain. For one, you will know when it starts to go (unless you ignore your car's "sounds") plus it's not something that is guaranteed to happen and it never did in my CTS. (same letter, same drill, hit 90k with no issues at all....new owner has 186k on her now) Just keep an eye/ear out and get it done once the warranty is completely out if you want to play it safe. I've always said, it you cannot afford to repair the said car, you should not have purchased it. (not you specifically, just saying in relation to this)

I bought mine literally 3 weeks ago that's probably why I haven't received anything from the mail yet. I did message BMW NA about it to confirm with my VIN.
Again I'm trying to separate speculations from facts here...

Did you see an announcement on the extended warranty re. Timing Chain? How do you know a letter may be in the mail.

I have a 2012 328 - so two model years before yours. MY14 received some updates compared to MY12. Yet, my car has been absolutely bulletproof. It has 69500 miles on it now. I have had only one issue, which was that the hood latch went bad and it was replaced under warranty several thousand miles ago. I have received extended warranty mailers from BMW for the thermostat and timing chain, but I have not had issues with those components and do not hear the timing chain whine. Still, I'm going to the dealer soon (before I hit 70k) to get a check-up done on the chain and get their opinion. Overall, I am very satisfied with this car.

I have not seen any official announcement. Only from fellow posters on this site mentioning they've received something in the mail. I've just emailed BMW NA about this and still waiting a response from them.

That's great to hear man! Since I'll only be driving the car for "pleasure" then it will probably take me 4-5 years more before I hit the 70k mark.

With a moderate amount of searching you can find a picture that someone took of the letter he received posted in one of the many timing chain threads.

Just got a confirmation from one of the BMW NA representative. They confirmed that based on my VIN, my timing chain is covered for up to 7 years. Not only that, they also said that my Engine Coolant thermostat is also covered up to 10 years/120,000 miles. And lastly the Leak Diagnosis module for 10years/120,000 miles.

For the record, Ive had my 2014 for five months and still no letter. Not overly worried but would still like to have an official letter. Not sure if we ever will receive one...

I hear you. Luckily, I have an official email from a BMW NA representative confirming it so if anything I'll make sure I save that email or print it then use it as an formal/informal documentation so hopefully the dealership will have no issues just in case anything happens to my timing chain.

Since you didn't buy it new BMW can't send you a letter as easily as they can those who did. They have to go through registration records, state by state, to track down each of the millions of owners of affected cars. It doesn't matter that you don't have a letter addressed to you, only that the warranty extension is a matter of public record.

I agree that it doesn't matter either way to have proof of the warranty extension but I do believe it would be very easy to get new owners important information like this. I signed up a new ConnectedDrive account day one that is tied to my VIN.

Its almost embarrassing that BMW doesn't use this as a way to contact owners of vehicles. They could post this once to all affected VIN's and be done with it.

Yeah I agree, as long as you have signed up on their website and confirmed the VIN, it would be super simple to track and send email/mail communications about this.

I have a March 2014 production 328. Received a letter for the timing chain extension about 2 months ago, I've had the car since new.

Lol wow that’s Really late but then again I’m not sure when the timing chain issue became an official public issue. I’ve had the car for about 4 weeks now so I guess I won’t be receiving anything soon.. so far no issues on my car!

Can someone please confirm.
The big news here is that BMW has redesigned the timing chain components. How exactly? Based on RealOEM, there was a part number change for the N20 Timing Chain starting 01/2015 so we can assume then that N20 and N26 engines with build dates of 2015 have the updated timing chain and components.

The warranty extension for the timing chain guide was a decision of BMW USA so it does not apply to Canada. To date (January 23, 2018), BMW Canada has refused to acknowledge a problem or proactively address the problem. Perhaps the class action suit in Ontario will change their thinking. It really is like the recall scenario in the movie "Fight Club", for now they (BMW Canada) think the cost out-ways the risk/cost until that changes they will do nothing. BMW Canada has a D+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), this speaks volume about the head office.

Thanks for that info. Since my car is a 2014 year, and production built 11/2013, i do not have the redesigned chain component. I'm now kinda hoping I get the issue before the extended 7 year warranty expires so that my repair will be covered.

The more I think about your situation, I would have done the same. BMW Canada sounds to me like the GM of US! I shunned GM and Cadillac for similar BS reasons and am never looking back!

You are definitely covered if you purchased it in the US and have less than 70k miles.
