Anyone out there still an original owner of a BMW past 200,000 miles?

Just bought a 2016 328i and I usually keep my cars forever.

Any tips on keeping it past 250,000 miles?!

The fact that there aren't any responses to this tread should answer your question.

I just bought my first new BMW in December, and before that I had only owned Japanese cars (Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus). Those cars could easily go over 200k with fairly minimal maintenance. My Acura's had transmission issues but I was able to get by without having to replace it.

I would suspect that keeping a BMW past 100k would essentially be uneconomical since the repairs / maintenance are expensive - unless you are handy and can do it yourself. At that point, most would consider just using that money towards a newer car.

When I leased my 340, I came to the conclusion that it is only a little more to lease a new 3 series every 3 years (during times when they have promotions like Dec), than buy one and keep it for 9 years. That extra money gives me a car that is under maintenance / warranty for the full term and I'll always have the latest tech/design.

Or perhaps the older BMW's last longer than today's? I think I've seen some people saying on other forums that their cars are still "going strong." It honestly would be disappointing that such expensive cars would need that much TLC and that much maintenance just to keep alive...

I think my dream car is a BMW with the reliability / ownership cost of a Japanese car. If they could do that, they could steal a lot of customers who don't buy German for this reason.

From what I read on other posts, people recommend putting aside 200/mo for a BMW that is out of the maintenance/warranty period. Seems like a lot to me considering you can lease a new one for 4-500/mo.

My Nissan Maxima now is past 193,000. 2009 - yes, I have driven a TON over the past 7 years (more like 6 yrs 3 mos)!!

A number of people say that BMW's CAN last that long as long as I keep up with the maintenance and oil changes. But I also heard that the electronics fail faster than the engine and transmission. I think there's some truth to that...

Any car can last more than 200K with the proper maintenance. I have seen a lot of BMW with close to 300K and some with over 400K, granted those were E30 with M20B27 engines, which for the most part were bullet proof.

Proper maintenance and minor abuse is key.

german car with over 100k = ticking time bomb. if you're looking for a car thats built to last look elsewhere like japanese or american.

My 1989 Bmw 325 is doing just fine. Oil change every 3000.

I'm almost there on my 2001 330i. Have 189K, and its still going strong. Nothing catastrophic, worst was when my clutch burned out in 2006. Other than that, just perform yearly maintenance.

My sisters 2008 328i is at 110K now. Runs fairly smooth. My 2007 335I made it to 90K before I sold it, although it cost $$$$ to keep.
My 1995 318I made it to like 167k before it crapped out.

It's all about the maintenance and repairs. Also, imo, turbocharged engines will require more repairs/$$$$ than naturally aspirated engines.

I had my 2001 330i e46 for 11 years with 210K mile. everything was still working great, but was concerned it was going. My 328 lasted only 6 years with 175K miles before things started going.

my E38 740i made it to 160k unfortunately the original owner wasn't too good with keeping up maintenance so it had to go

If you maintain it...it will last. Simple as that. The annoying things on the older cars were stuff like sensors and electronics that cost as much as the car is worth. The essentials last a while. Bimmerforums has tons of cars over 200k. My old 328is had over 210 before the clutch went out. I sold it to someone because it cost almost as much to replace that than the car was worth (lived in the city at the time).

So as far as tips go...maintenance. Fluids and all that...keep it running right and I dont see why youd have any problems. You will spend money on maintenance but it still saves more than what youd lose in depreciation buying another new car

Do you really think there will be that many F30s with over 200k yet? Or was this a general question? If so, I have multiple BMWs with north of 200k. My track car became a track car with just over 200k on the clock. It's now around 250k. Do the maintenance and fix it when it breaks. There's no reason a car can't be kept on the road indefinitely.

Here are some personal examples:

Best friend's wife driving her 2002 325i that she bought new. 220k miles, running strong.

Our 2009 328i is now at ~176k and climbing quickly, running strong.

My 2003 330i ZHP that I sold at ~140k miles is still running around town with over 200k miles on it. The kid has modded it quite a bit and it's shockingly still on its original clutch.

My only worry with these newer engines would be the turbos and injectors. As everyone said before, proper maintenance will go a long way.

This is really only a worry on the N54 motors with piezo-injectors, AFAIK. The N55 and newer motors all use standard solenoid injectors. RE: the turbocharging, there are plenty of old Saabs and Volvos running over 300k miles on turbo engines, but I would likely budget for a new turbo between 150k-200k.

Like others have indicated, it's all about proper maintenance. My experience has always been that Japanese cars last the longest when ignored, but European cars (excluding VAG products) will last the longest when cared for and maintained.
