TPMS

Can anyone confirm here in Canada:

Ordered a set of winter wheels, tires, and TPMS. They confirmed that TPMS was not required so they refunded that part of my order. Was advised that the pressure system works with the hub and ABS, not a direct sensor. Is this the case? Just bought my car in May so new to the F30 world. Thanks.

Yes, they are correct, Canadian Models use the ABS sensor whereas US models have TPMS sensors in the valve stem.

I confirm this as well.

Due to lack of ABS sensors Canadian issued cars (and maybe other markets) will not display individual PSi information from each tire. Quite frankly I'm happy to forego this extra data, not to mention cost saving of not having to install TPMS sensors in all 4 corners. Additionally the luxury of being able to swap all kinds of wheel/tires combos without getting that annoying TPMS error on the dash, as also a big plus! (wow that was a lot of info!)

waddup peeps.

trying to read up on this tpms vs abs sensor for our (canadian) cars. i ran the vin but none of the fields say anything about tpms or abs sensor.

or perhaps i just don't know what i'm looking for/at?

besides getting the car scanned, how else could i confirm on my own what i have? the sales guy did say it has tpms. idrive says tpm reset. my valves are rubber. no individual pressure per tire on idrive.

thanks.

Rubber valves = ABS sensor

Metallic valves = TPMS

Generally, yeah, but aren't there tpms with rubber valves now though?

Not on our models. You also mentioned you don’t see individual tire pressures. Our vehicles use the ABS wheel sensor. I don’t mind it - while the car takes a minute or two for warm up I use the digital pressure gauge to circle check and top up air if needed.

ah, thanks man. then this makes it even easier to switch from summer to winter tires.

i shopped around for winter tires and most shops have been upselling tpms, although a handful of shops didn't suggest getting them and said to just ignore the warning lights.

so in this case, we could put any wheel/tire set and no need to worry about this sensor. nice.

If you install wheels with TPMS sensors on them, do Canadian-spec cars have the necessary hardware + software to use the sensors, or will they still rely solely on the ABS system?

hmmm, i'm curious to know too.

i'm guessing the sensor module would need an update/replacement to communicate with tpms. or perhaps the module can communicate to ftm or tpms and it just needs programming?
