Hey everyone,

For anyone who has the M Performance Exhaust on their N20 car, what was the install like? i.e. is there cutting, welding, or is it straight bolt on? Was thinking about getting one and wanted to know if it was something I could do myself. While you're at it, how do you like it? Much appreciated, thanks everyone.

Recently purchased the exhaust and installed myself using the DIY (link below) on this forum. The daunting task comes down to cutting your stock exhaust, which can induce some anxiety, then using the provided clamp to install the MPE. However, it was not very difficult and overall was a rewarding experience when complete.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it, going to a local muffler shop and having them install it would probably be a safe alternative to DIY as well as avoiding higher costs at the dealership for this relatively easy modification. I have heard some say the dealer will charge as much as $400 to install.

I went to an exhaust shop. I bought new exhaust hangers (the rubber holders but didn't need to) and the OEM exhaust clamp. the exhaust shop quoted me 100 but charged 60 since it was such an easy job

Definitely try it yourself and try getting another person. I did it with a friend a year back wasn't to difficult. Once the cut is made on the pipe it's smooth sailing from there.

Ive done the MPE on my brother n55, it was very simple. Hardest part was getting the pipe cut (took long with the cutter we had). Make sure you cut the pipe 100% straight and not on an angle. After getting the pipe cut it was easier than an oil change. Lube the exhaust hanger, use the exhaust hanger tool to remove the old exhaust hanger. Remove exhaust from under the car, SLIDE ON THE EXHAUST CLAMP and then slide MPE under the car and have a friend help you lift it, while you get it hanging onto the hangers. Then you align the exhaust and tighten the clamp when you get it just right.

it is much easier to unbolt the rear muffler bracket and insulator and move them to the m-performance muffler.

i just installed an MPE on my 335 last weekend. it took an hour including jacking the car up and dropping it. i highly recommend getting a chain pipe cutter. it takes a little bit of time but the cut is straight, very nice, and won't vibrate the hell out of things like a sawzall would. make sure you have a file on hand to de-bur the cut pipe. it will make getting a good seal with the clamp a lot easier. it's common for parts of the pipe to be cut completely through before others are, just keep working the chain cutter back and forth until it's all cut through. it'll feel like things are grabbing funny and you're ruining the pipe - but you're not. just keep going.

having a friend on hand really helps get the old muffler out and the new one in, and having someone there to help you align the tips in the bumper cutout correctly while you tighten and adjust the clamp is nice.

i was very nervous about doing the install myself but it went perfectly and wasn't hard at all.

Brought it to an exhaust shop, had them cut off stock exhaust at the dimple, weld on new exhaust for $50
