External mirror housing failure

Rusted up and fell off! No damage to the rest of the mirror assembly. Never come across it before especially as these are non retracting.

That's mental- how old is your car? Being replaced under warranty?

My driver side one has a lot of play in it compared to the other side.. hope this is not the reason why!

Car was 3years old last week. This is divers side too. No space at the dealer to repair for two weeks so will not know about warranty yet. In the meantime I'll strap it up with gaffer tape. Can't say I'm that impressed.

3 years... that's sods law for you!

Though, irrespective of warranty that's clearly not what you'd expect so they should cover it still.

I wonder if this rusting here is in anyway linked to the rust issue found in the seat bases that afflicted the first run of f30s?

That looks like something of an old car from the 1970s. Definitely not acceptable in a 3 year car. I would press them on the warranty issue.

Was it damaged and glued back on before you owned it? that's corrosion on a grand scale.

Do you live near the sea (or in it)?

Lol. I don't live near the coast. I'm not aware of any hits taken whilst I've been in it and there is no other damage. I bought the car 4 months old from new (ex dealer managers run about). I can only think the seal failed and the ingress of water of the years weakened it so when I was polishing the other day the extra bit of pressure finally did it in.

I will certainly press for a warranty claim as this should never happen on a car 3 years old. Being external to the car, I'm not sure if it's classed as body rust and BMWs anti rust guarantee.

Looks like steel-alloy reaction to each other. A bit like the wheels welding themselves to the hubs.

You only have to look at it to see there was a problem well before the 3 year warranty was up

That's ridiculous, I could understand if it was not as clear cut.

It's blatant it could have failed well within warranty.

Exactly what bit of the 3 weeks did you first report it?

As its from you reporting the issue not them looking at it..

Also, use days where possible and round down.

Total bollux. Doesn't say much for your local dealer if that's his attitude.

I wonder if it's the dealer in 'ull, as I had a few run ins with them. Anyway, I'd be straight onto BMW UK.

This. I'd be trying another dealer / BMW UK then naming & shaming the first one.

Proper crap. Get picture & tweet to BMW UK. That might get things rolling.

Reported it a week after its 3rd anniversary. Couldn't get in until 2 weeks later. Job is done now. There was some goodwill discount on labour and parts. Am surprised an extended warranty wasn't suggested.

Not only should it have been a full warranty repair, there is a bit of sensible leaway.

The dealer should raise it with BMW as a major issue - possible water ingress / corrosion in the area.

They then do x random checks and if found its a tech bulletin.

Preventative Maintenace, it can actually save money and reputation.

I wouldn't let it lie, IMHO it's at least worth a call to BMW UK.
