How do I get the dealer to swap my private plate onto my new F31

I'm trading in my E91 for a nice shiny new white M Sport F31. My question is how do I get the dealer to swap my plate onto the new car, he is stating I need to put it on retention then in a few weeks re register the car? I thought they would register my new car with the existing plate for when I collect it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stephen

When I bought my new f31 at the start of the month, I used the new online system to take the reg of my current car at the time and put it on retention, it then gives you the new reg there and then online. I got the new V5 and retention certificate in 2-3 days. I dropped the retention certificate into the dealer a few days before I was due to pick up my new car and they had the reg on the car when I collected it.

Same with me. The "BMW genius" did it all for me. He did it 3 days prior to the swap of cars. So I drove old car with my plate on it up until changeover day and then they put the "real" plates on it prior to moving it on. Worked well and was really nice having own plate on brand new car....and I didn't have to pay retention fees!

A very nice girl at the dealers did mine about a week before I collected my new car. Did it all on line, took my plate of the part ex and put it back on its original plate, then put my plate straight onto the new car. Paid the transfer fee, all done in less than 5 minutes and on the new car when I collected it!

Paul.

Dealer took care of it for me, transferred it and put it on the car.

Dealer has got a new online system and the entire process takes only a day.

I have had done the same thing on my MINI and took a day moreover they didn't even charge me £80 for the transfer.

Same here, negotiated the plate change in the deal. Online system is very good and very quick.

I'm debating whether to do this with my current plate. I currently drive a Focus ST3 with the plate ST03 JAM (my name is Jamie).
I don't know whether to leave it on, possibly to increase value when selling (very slightly) or to put it on the new BMW but it might look stupid.

While everyone was saying do a retention I did a transfer a month back. Had both log books back within the week - saves having to get new plates/change insurance (incurring admin fee) on your old car when it goes back to it's original plate.
