Parking aid display

My 2012 328i Luxury Auto is the first car I've had with a 'parking aid ' or whatever its correct name is. Very useful, those varying beeps and amber and red area signals. But it only gets displayed automatically after selecting reverse, yes? Can I switch it on manually please, so that I can edge my forward to some barrier ahead?

Press the button down by the gear stick. I will show on the idrive if your speed is below 9 MPH I think.

Yes, press the P button next to the gear lever
