Question OTA Map Updates Timeline (NBT-EVO)

I have a new 2018 F36 which I got from the dealer almost two weeks ago. I have activated BMW Assist (via the SOS button) and verified services are active and that the map region is set correctly in the BMW Connected portal.

I expected to see an update offered to me (the car shipped with 2017-1 map).

I don't see anything yet and was wondering if this is normal or if I should talk to the dealer / BMW Assist people about it.

Thanks!

I get OTA map updates - they just come down by themselves and you see a percentage in the top corner of the display, it then asks you if you're ready to restart NAV and make them active. I think you can force a check by pushing the I-drive controller to the right while in the NAV map screen but am not sure. I find mind downloads at random times (no real consistency that I've noticed), also, they've never downloaded right at the start of the drive so I don't think the check is part of the start up sequence (one download happened about 1 1/2 hours into a drive).

That's very good to know. Can I ask what your region is set to, the build date and what version of the map you have now?

Thanks!

I agree with grahamrb. I have a 2016 F30 340i and my experiences with OTA nav updates have been very similar to what he has posted. My last update was sometime in August, 2017 2nd quarter updates for TX region.

Thanks. Do you now have 2017-2 or 2017-4?

I believe I now have 2017-2 for TX alone. The rest of the map database is still 2015-2 (IIRC).

Last OTA update for me was to 2017-1.
-2, -3, -4 never arrived.
2018-1 not out yet per some maps websites.

BMW Genius stated that some regions don't get more than one OTA update per year (false advertising BMW!!!). Also said that dealer must update a full set of maps free of charge, but only once during the update term (4 yrs?).

Service Advs. totally ignorant...claims didn't even know about OTA updates.

'16 428xi GC...on 2017-1 for CO/UT/NM/AZ. No update since about April '17. It's region dependent. UP to 4x/yr, not necessarily 4x/yr.

I talked to BMW Genius, and they said I have to pay for the full update. They did not mention this once-free update to me. Is this documented somewhere?

Thanks!

I heard they're free for 3 years and it gets pushed out in waves, some will get it sooner than others and the que for another person does not start until those people finish downloading. It stays on their screen until they've completed the upgrade.

I have a 2014 335i and I just went ahead and bought a lifetime licence from bimmercoders.com promo code BMW. Worked perfectly and last a lifetime! Also, BMW releases 2 maps a year so you'd typically see 201*-1 & 201*-2(for NEXT, EVO may be different) depending on the update you want to apply(Currently the newest for North America is 2018-1).

P.S. There's ways of getting the FSC code(Search FSC code generator) for free but I didn't want to deal with it, I just paid $50 for lifetime updates. Sure beats stealerships - $200-$400 per update.

One question: With the lifetime license, do you also get free lifetime map updates or do you have to pay for those every time?

Free for a lifetime as the site I mention above stats, just be aware that some sites sell annual or single licences not lifetime. You can check if you need the FSC code by downloading the map onto FAT32 formated USB, plugging it into your idrive and then hit start update, if a menu pops up asking for the FSC code then you got the answer, if it doesn't you might have lifetime or free for a period of time. I've seen conflicting info, some say 3 year free map update from buying the car new, some say one free update but it's worth asking the dealer if it's free for your car first. If you don't have EVO NAV, your car won't be able to do over the air updates, you'll need to bring it in to the dealer and have them apply the code/update or download to USB, buy code and do it yourself route.

Seeing your signature, it shows you have a 2018 so you should have EVO and should be getting free OTA updates.

I went to the site, it does say unlimited update, but the language to me, is a bit unclear. I guess I'll email and ask them.

And you're right, I believe I have free updates for 4 years. I was able to find 2017-4 EVO full map data and update it, and it didn't ask for a code.

More than the FSC, I want to make sure I get continued access to the map data, which seems really hard to find for the EVO units.

[Edited to add]
Ok, I just talked to someone on the bimmercoders site, and map data is NOT included with lifetime. Lifetime just provides the FSC code, so you don't have to buy one again.

However, they do have a way to just get the full map data, for $20, which seems reasonable.

Mine is very behind but still works and the system is probably confused because I replaced my factory ID4 EVO with two different ID5 NBT EVO units.

Right now, I’m on North America EVO 2016-2 and CAN, AK 2017-1. NY, VT, CT, NJ, PA, 2016-3

My ATM is factory installed and my ID5 NBT EVO is retrofitted.

I tried many ways but all failed to find the 2017-4 EVO map.

My 2018 F31 has a 7/17 build date. The base map is 2017-1 and it just (finally) updated (via OTA) to 2017-2 for my region. Shawn Sheridan referred me to Gerry at BMW Nav Codes for a 2018-1 map. All was simple to install and Gerry was wonderful to work with. I highly recommend him for updates. Thanks, shawnsheridan

Post 2017-2

OTA 2017-2 finally installed...in March 2018!

2018-1 NBT EVO is available for the full map data set.

Genius was certain that I was entitled to ONE free full map update just once during the subscription term. In part, that was to deal with some drivers not getting OTA updates due to non-availability in their location, per Genius. I have not pressed the dealer to update.

I wonder if the OTA update schedule is actually different from the full map update schedule. Seems odd to get a "2017-2" in 2018, though.

Posting here both to get some information and to provide some - I spoke to BMW Genius and they did inform me that the OTA updates are off cycle from the full maps. Ergo, don't necessarily expect 2018-1 at the time that the full maps are released. Also, there could be 1-4 updates per year depending on the region in question.

We purchased our 2017 340i xDrive in March of this year, and did get 2017-2 to download OTA, but so far there has been no 2018 update. The Genius folks did say they don't have data on what update is current for what region, so maybe others here can share. We're in (IL, IN, MI, WI) and curious if anyone else possibly has a newer version yet.

Finally, they did mention there is one courtesy update (the Genius literally mentioned FSC code) included as on occasion updating the base map data will kick-start the OTA to work properly on some vehicles. Obviously, if you don't need it for that, it would probably be best to take advantage of it at the end of the subscription term so the rest of the country is up to date.

So, maybe it would make sense to have a (possibly sticky) maps thread somewhere with current versions (full and OTA)? I'm always curious to check and see when it is time to update my M3's CIC data as well. With all the construction we have at the moment it is nice to have accurate data.

I'm just starting to learn all this stuff and from what I can tell, my system originally came with EVO 2015-3+ maps and it received an OTA update and updated it to 2017-2. Is this correct?
