What is a JB4?
The JB4 is a plug and play tune available for turbocharged vehicles. The JB4 tuner installs between your car's sensors and its DME/ECU (computer) and manipulates vehicle performance through these connections making your vehicle much faster. While it's not the only tuning system that operates this way the JB4 separates itself from the competition with much more advanced connection points and processing including CANbus, fuel & spark control, Bluetooth to your smartphone, and a variety of innovative and advanced features not possible with any other system. BMS regularly publishes free mapping and firmware updates adding performance and features as ongoing development allows. In addition, the JB4 system is not VIN locked to your vehicle and can quickly removed and swapped between cars or resold at a later time. Often imitated but never duplicated the JB4 has been the gold standard in plug and play turbocharged performance tuning for over a decade.

PWG or EWG? Also, do you need any bolt ons for this? I have the BMS stage 1 right now (1 step below jb4) with no bolt ons other than an intake.

This tuner works with both PWGs (has the blue harness, see photos) and also EWGs, and it also has the black harness if you want to run E85 tunes. I believe what JB4 did was update harnesses at some point to add the EWG harness, but they left the blue PWG harness on (last pic below) so as to make the tuners more compatible with a larger range of vehicles (that is why the instructions for EWG and PWG are the same, with some skipped steps, see link below). You simply tuck away the unused harnesses (or cut, but I left everything as is, no cuts). I was running this on a very early '12 n20 with the PWG, so I just zip tied the purple/blue EWG harness aside (see pic, and you can verify your EWG harness).

This tuner does not have the OBDII canbus interface cord ($35), you simply use the two red T taps in the engine bay, but you could always purchase the OBDII harness if you do not want to use the T taps (see link below). That canbus plug was a later update/add on at some point, but I have to think not having to run that through the firewall and just using the T taps would be a bit easier, and the t taps leave an impossible to notice pin prick on those wires, if warranty is a concern. But thats entirely up to the next user...

The tuner box serial port connections on this unit were electrical taped so as to avoid water infiltration/corrosion in the engine bay (not exactly a dry place).

No mods necessary, from what I understand. I was not running any intake, or exhaust, just the tuner, and it added a noticeable boost in power and response. I had zero issues. Very smooth everything...just don't put crappy gas in, higher octane the better, at least 91 or higher.

This has the stage 1 tune on it already, and from what I recall there are either several others loaded, or which are easy to load via the serial port to USB A cord (its been awhile, sorry, I know for sure the relatively basic 91/93 tune is on there from what I recall).
