2014 NBT - ISTEP Upgrade

Hi all,

I have a 2014 F30 with NBT and can play BT music fine from my iPhone, however it will only show artwork/song name on the first song I play. Anything after that either doesn't update or shows 'Unknown track'. I also have the latest software update from BMW installed and that didn't change anything.

I have read an I-Step update can solve this issue and seems to be a problematic issue in the 2014 MY. I have E-Sys/Cable etc, I have done some coding previously to enable stuff before.

Is anyone able to point me in the right directions in terms of a guide/whats required to upgrade the IStep? Is it just one module or do all need to be updated just for this update?

TIA

For I-step whole car about 40 to 50 mins plus need a battery charger

Or if you have an android phone look at the

Android Auto for IDrive NBT 4/5/6 App thread below

I have a battery charger so that is fine. I am using iPhone unfortunately.

Hoping someone may have a guide on how to do this.

That is very helpful thank you.

I was under the impression it was done in E-Sys, but I guess it can be done in ISTA too.

Will I get away with just updating the NBT module to achieve the update I am trying to do, or do all modules need to be updated?

TIA

I don't recommend using ISTA with ENET.
Best way is to get ENET cable and update HU_NBT with E-Sys.

I do have an ENet cable and E-Sys. Full pszData is required to do this on E-sys right?

Is doing it this route just a case of reading/flashing the iStep level on just HU_NBT and its job done? Just want to make sure if I flashed NBT to a newer 'version', would the other modules not need to be on the same iStep for it to work?

Thanks for your reply.

Same problem on my 2014 335d

Hi SY14 F30,

Did you complete the ISTA software update on your car in the end?

I've got the same problem on my 2014 335d, where it only displays the 'first track' information, and then says 'Unknown track' for subsequent tracks.

I'm just reaching out to see if you managed to fix the issue with an ISTEP software update? Did you take it to a dealer or do it yourself?

Regards, Pete

Hi SY14 F30,

I know you never replied back to me, but I went ahead and carried out a software update via the Aftersales Online AOS. Within the Integrated Service Technical Applications (ISTA), under Vehicle Management, Software Update, Comfort.... There were 71 actions/updates to be performed for the following control units:

ACC
ACSM
ASD
CON
DDE
DSC
EDC
EGS
EKPS
EPS
FEM
FLA
FZD
HU-H
ICM
IHKA
KOMNI
REM

Integr. level (before update): F020-13-11-504.
Integr. level (after update): F020-21-11-540.

The update for my 2014 335D took approximately 5 hours via an ICOM programmer. So make sure your car is connected to a battery charger, fans and headlights were on the entire time. That's a long time to risk bricking a module imo.

Conclusion:

All of my Bluetooth issues have disappeared and although the car never originally came with Bluetooth, the coding of the Bluetooth Audio remained in place after the software update. I'm now able to see all of the track information/metadata on the idrive screen, and I'm able to change tracks using the steering wheel controls, whilst using Spotify on an iPhone. The responsiveness of changing tracks is also greatly improved.

Even though this car has been serviced by BMW many times over the years, they never bothered to update/flash any of the modules since it was built in 2013. Looking at the version numbers, my car is now updated to F020-21-11-540 (which is likely the November 2021 update).

Issue resolved for me. Spotify Premium subscription pending

I am planning to upgrade my F25. How many amps would I need to have in the battery charger please?
