MPSS up front w/ MP4S out back??
So I understand this is kind of a ridiculous thing to ask, but input would be appreciated.
I'm about to take delivery of new wheels. They're Apex VS-5RS's from the latest group buy. I went with this setup: Front: 18x9" ET30 with 245/40-18 tires Rear: 18x9.5" ET35 with 275/35-18 tires I'm looking to order some tires and saw Costco has $150 off Michelin's until the end of January. Unfortunately, they don't have the Pilot Sport 4 S's in 245/40, only 275/35. Conversely, they only have Michelin Pilot Super Sports in 245/40 and not 275/35. Being somewhat similar tires in compound, but different tread patterns, would there be any reason I couldn't run the MPSS up front with the MP4S out back? I'd be saving about $400 just having this done at Costco vs. Tire Rack + Shop mount/balance. Plus all the Costco tire benefits. Yeah, I realize I'm being somewhat cheap, but there's also a convenience factor involved. |

Didn't the MPSS get replaced by P4S? How old are the MPSS? I mean you probably would be fine but I'm OCD and I'd either fork the extra cash, get different size, or different tires all together. You can try and get a different shop to price match what Costco is offering.

The engineering response would include the risk of differing grip characteristics leading to "unpredictable" handling and response. The difference is probably pretty minimal with the PS4S edging out the PSS in most measurable areas, and from what I've read the PS4S mostly improves in wear characteristic. The front and rear already wear differently even on the same tire/compound, so idk how critical that is. And if anything, we need the better wear on the rear vs. the front so in reality you might just have to replace all 4 at the same time versus your rears wearing out substantially sooner than the front. There's nothing stopping you from doing it other than your own preference.

When I bought my rims they came with those tires on them. MPSS front and MP4S rear. Had no issues. If anything the rear being MP4S would be better since it's supposed to have better grip than mpss.
