Can't decide between 435i and 340i
Hello,
I'm new to this forum (in fact new to BMW :P). My first experience with a bmw is on an M4 when I rented it for a weekend as a birthday present to myself. That is when I feel in love with bwm and dreamed of owning one. I currently own a 2016 maxima and looking for a change. I started searching for a used bwm and found 2 cars that I like one is 2016 340i with 44k miles and 2015 435i (M package) with 56k miles priced at $25000 and $24000 respectively. Though I really like the styling of the coupe, I'm hesitant to consider it over the 340i because of the high mileage compared to 340i. I need your help in deciding between these two cars. If I pull the trigger and buy 435i is there anything that I need to look out for. I heard bwm needs a major service every 30k miles, if yes what would that cost me as the coupe is almost due a major service. Any maintenance cost comparison on both cars is much appreciated. BTW, they both are 6-speed manual's. 340I: https://www.deluxeautosales.com/used...281609f798.htm 435I: https://www.norrisford.com/used/BMW/...earchDepth=1:1 Thanks!! These cars are difficult to compare. 340 has the newer B58 engine while 435 has the previous generation N55. I prefer B58 and it's never perfect linear power delivery.
Is there a way to learn how both cars were driven and maintenance history? I'd say these two factors are even more important than the engines. |

My 2014 435 xDrive with m package (and many others) was $25k with only 26k miles. Keep looking, there are lots out there.
Whatever you do, get the car inspected before purchase. Hold out for one that has all the features/color you want instead of planning on retrofitting. 6 speed will be less common though, I suggest at least test driving an automatic as the 8 speed is still a lot of fun (coming from someone who's driven manuals almost exclusively). |

This ^^ without a doubt...., as I currently have a 435 with a few mods . If you'll be considering future power mods, the B58 is a FAR better platform to build on . .

340i would be my choice. The 340i is the LCI (Life Cycle Impulse)/facelift version. In addition to the new motor it got a number of mechanical tweaks that make it a better car.

You have 2-3 month's worth of primetime buying season. Wait for the car you want.
Do some research on the available options, wait for the right car and do lots of due diligence for every car. Don't price shop, just take each car for what it is and compare accordingly. Be willing to overpay for the exact car you want if the example is exceptional. Drive a few cars, the more you look the easier it is to know when to pull the trigger. Expand your search radius. 100% familiarise yourself with the options available so you know what to look for. I didn't do this, bought my first BM was quite lucky with what the previous owner had spec'd but equally surprised some basic things weren't included by default (folding mirrors and split or folding rear seats to name a couple).
Things like upgraded sound system I'm told is a must for most, and pro nav is worth it too. Get a copy of the sales brochure for that year and have a look |

I'd always go for the 4 Series, even if it is 435i and not 440i. 430i vs 340i..... I'd probably bite my tongue, close my eyes and go for the 3. But 6 cylinder vs 6 cylinder. No-brainer. The 4 has so much more to offer.

As an N55 owner, I would say go with the B58 in the '40 cars. That engine is soooo strong. I like the look of the 4 series, but really, go with what's practical for you in terms of 3 vs 4.

But damn I really like the looks of the 435, that's I'm more biased to 435 even it has more miles on it. |

I have been shopping since a month now and these cars perfectly fit my need. I have already lost a good car, cars.com says these two are hot cars and they would be sold within a week (I don't know how true that is, but don't wanna take a chance). I check which of those is a better car and better deal before pulling the trigger. BTW, the search radius was always 500miles :P I was willing to do a long drive to get the perfect car within my budget. |
