With all the sales they're getting, I get the feeling BMW is just bringing new products just to see how they would fare and if it's deemed a failure, they're willing to accept it and move on. As for BMW answering a question no one has asked, I look at that as trying to stay ahead. Look at Apple and the iPad. How many editorials and columns did we read about how useless it would be if it was just a bigger iPhone? No one was really looking for a tablet but Apple makes one and now it's mainstream.
(Of course, it could just be BMW going crazy and there's no real reason to make these ugly GT's...) |

I want to like it, I really do. Hopefully it will look better with the camo off, but right now it looks like another 5GT mini-clone. I have only once seen a 5GT with actual plates(not dealer demo) driving around. I would think BMW learned from that ugly mess, maybe not.

This is one BMW I'm not holding my breath for.
The 5GT is by far the least desirable model in BMW's current lineup and I don't see how this 3GT could turn out to be any better. |

I still have hope for this vehicle. Doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the 5GT. I think it could be made to look pretty sporty, but I guess we'll see as the camo continues to come off.

I dont understand why they bring the super slow selling gt's to the US but not diesel engines? I would think the diesel engines have a better business case.

Don't really understand this. Between the sedan (which looks much better) and the estate (which looks much better) I cannot understand why you'd have the GT? Not to mention how steep the price will be. Hope it's successful, but I fail to understand it's purpose.

From what I remember SCOTT saying, this was suppposed to be built on the same LWB version of the chassis that the 3er Li in China is. But in looking at the pictures, it is hard to judge whether this is the case or not. It doesn't really look like a longer wheel base than the standard F30 sedan.
It will be interesting to see if they bring this to the US. The 5GT obviously does not sell terribly well here, and we already know they are going to bring the F31 wagon in addition to the sedan, whereas the 5GT was sort of meant to replace the 5 series wagon in the US. So is there room for the 3GT too? |

I just don't understand why BMW feels the need to make the 5/3 GT. They don't sell, they are ugly, and they offer no benefit over a wagon other than supposedly you can open the trunk without getting everyone in the car cold. Whoop-de-f*****-do. I've seen dealers that still have 2010 550i GT launch models rotting away on their lots. Probably didn't help that one of the launch models was a 550i rwd with no options....

What a pointless terrible awful looking crap. What sucks more is BMW builds this despite the fact that they know this car won't sell well (well, 5GT doesn't) at the same time we ask for a Z4 M, but we get nothing.
BMW sucks badly recently. |

Has the 5GT really sold better than the 5 Touring did over a similar period in the US when it was available? I have to wonder about that. For it to be a meaningful comparison, you'd have to consider the period when the 5 wagon was new, not just before it was discontinued in favor of the GT.
Also, the fact is that BMW is committed to bringing the F31 3 series wagon to the US, so clearly there are enough sales to justify selling wagons here. I suspect BMW will sell the 5 wagon in the US again one day, though probably not the F11 generation. As for other countries, specifically China, according to SCOTT that is where the GT is really selling. Quote:

lol Guess I'm going to be a combo breaker here because I absolutely love the 5GT =)
But, and I think I can say that too, I have no hopes for the 3GT, never liked any of the rendered pictures and I kind of think it's going to be the same as I feel about the X1, it shouldn't have been build. Then again, it might change over time.. I never liked the X6 in the beginning either (which is kind of why I went with the X5 instead) but now I do like it a lot more. We'll see when the final product comes out =)

China does not have the heck of a reference as far as what cars are supposed to be... you can sell them anything with BMW or Buick, or MB, or VW, or Audi on it, they will buy it... the more expensive the better just as long as you seem to be rolling or ballin'! (Lambo or Ferrari etc ...) As for us, we are cheaper and more picky! we want our cars a certain way only... and the GT just does not fit the bill as well as the Wagon ...

i just saw one at lunch time, and i seriously would pick it over the X6! Serious!... As for the 3GT, decent loooking or now, i still dont see the point... I wish BMW has put their effort on something like the A1 / A2 / A3 sedan killer...

Believe it or not the 5er GT has its market as a low volume production model as it was always intended to be. The 5er GT is due for its LCi soon and BMW will introduce it the 550d and 525d which will (in 525d) expand its options further in europe.
Most people fail to understand the appeal of the 5er GT , especially that it is car designed from the inside out and that shows in its very luxurious interior. Which is a very satisfying place to be in if you are ever in the rear. I was surprised on some trips around Europe that some hotels and establishments (Nothing to do with BMW) have the GT as a shuttle and limousine which is highly understandable. Because there is no other vehicle in its class that offers this level of luxury and refinement. The comments about the GT are mainly specific - Because it is always mentioned that the car has not sold as well in the US whilst they ignore the markets the car is doing well in - mainly BRIC markets. In China , for example some see the GT as an even more exclusive 5er Li , besides one thing I do find disappointing is that there is a forum for the GT here @ Bimmerpost that shows that there is a customer base for this car , even in the US. But again because of the "Specifics" they are drowned out by the negativity. The 3er GT is based on the Chinese market 3er Li but with its modular chassis - a section has been removed to accomodate the GT and the 4er Gran Coupe. The 3er chassis is available in short-mid-extended wheelbase options. The 3er GT is a more euro-centric car and will be available with BMW's sublime four cylinder diesel and petrol engines aswell as six cylinders. The 3er GT aims to bring that level of exclusivity as seen on the 5er GT to the entry class. Appearance wise it mixes the 3er and 5er GT , unfortunately the winter tyres make the car look heavy but it looks a lot better and in proportion on larger wheels. The 3er GT is also the first BMW model to be equipped with a pop-up rear spoiler. Again like the 5er GT it is low volume but extremely profitable as the 5er GT.
