3 Series GT Chassis Spotted in Factory

COMMENTS

The F34 3 Series GT (Gran Turismo) is just months from its debut and the first F34 chassis has now been spotted.

The 3 Series GT will feature a similar engine lineup to the F30 3 Series and we expect its public debut to possibly come at the 2013 NAIAS in January (if it will be sold in the US) or 2013 Geneva show in March.

For previous coverage and details thus far on the F34 GT, see http://www.bimmerpost.com/?s=f34

Interesting that it doesn't have the Hofmeister kink.

Well I really do not like the GT. I think it looks ugly and its an eyesore. The GT doesn't work for the 5 series, so i don't think it will work well for the 3 series. BMW already said that 5 series GT sales were "disappointing" in the US and that dealerships are not ordering many of them because people simply do not want them because it has failed to draw the station wagon crowd.

If it really is 3 GT then I think that it is very said that BMW still want's to make this ugly type of a car. I thought that they draw some conclusion after lesson with 5 GT

Oh, here we go with the 5GT bashing again!

Think globally. The US might not like it, but then the actual sales figures for the E61 demonstrated that Americans didn't like Tourers either. In 2011 the US was listed as the third biggest market behind Europe (excl. Germany & Britain), and Asia. It's not all about keeping Americans happy. IIRC correctly the E61 did ~1800 units in its BEST year in the US. 5GT has done ~50,000+ units globally so far. Maybe BMW's mistake was not offering the F11 to the US, and loosing out on those ~1800 units, but by adding the GT to the range they gained ~50,000 units.

You're getting the F31, having the 3GT alongside it in it's European and Asian markets can't really hurt, can it?

Waste of BMW's time IMO. Should have spend that money improving the wagon's...

If they would offer wagons with the right engines in the US, they would sell...

I think globally. Anytime I see the 5GT, no matter what country I am in, its still ugly.

X2. I don't know why BMW didn't bring more engine options to the wagons on this side of the pond. A 335 xi wagon would have been a hit, or a 530d wagon.

Note: I don't want to hear about how certifying certain engines for the US would cost more, the costs surely would be less than the R&D necessary for the GT's.

Maybe, but US spec anything is still just for the US, the GT's are for the rest of the world as well.

I'm not saying that the US shouldn't have got the F11, but that does not mean the rest of the world shouldn't get the GT's.

Can't use E60/61 as the sales barometer, both suffered from Bangle bad looks. F11 would sell rings around it in the US because it is both functional and beautiful.

I saw a 5er GT and almost puked. For a second I said "holy shit" is this the new 5series, it's hideous!

Thank you lord for a regular 5 series looking decent. GT needs to be driven into a lake.

It's not apparent in either the C or D pillars. Maybe it's not part of the frame and will be visible once the outer skin and trimwork goes on... Otherwise, that's a curious omission.

Well... yet another example that you need a license to drive but you don't need one to procreate.

Why not do what works? Why not save money and make people happy?

Poor decision making, BMW.
