good luck buddy! keep everything well documented just in case you need to take any other actions later down the road (like possible lemon or further repairs) you should understand your lemon laws just in case because of time limitations.

I mean it's a lease so I don't think that really pertains to me but I'll take a look. presumably it's all on BMW really.

I'd ask for a different car - a new engine shows up on your VIN and will be lovely to deal with when you trade it in.

B58 Engine Recall - BMW Service Bulletin SI B11 26 15

Engine
B58 Engine – Check and Replace Crankshaft Guide Bearing

Model
F30 3 Series Sedan with B58 engine and manual transmission.

Situation
The upper crankshaft guide bearing may wear out prematurely. The wear on the upper guide bearing can cause the clutch pedal to malfunction during shifting. The Engine Malfunction warning may be illuminated and a fault will be stored in the DME memory for the crankshaft sensor. Noise may be heard from the lower engine and transmission bell housing area.

If the crankshaft guide bearing or crankshaft is found damaged during the inspection then the engine must be replaced. Engine damage is a rare occurrence.

Affected Vehicles
This Service Action involves F30 vehicles produced from July 2015 to November 2015. Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked by your local BMW dealership.

Crank guide bearing, not too good. And why just for manuals? Thankfully I'm a January build w AT but this sure sucks for lots of folks.

Interesting to see it's only affecting manual transmissions and only a few months of last years builds. Sounds like they caught the problem and fixed it months ago.

Looking at etk, the engines are the same for manuals and autos, so wtf are they doing just replacing the manuals?

I'm not a gearhead, but do the crankshaft guide bearings operate differently on auto vs manual?

I don't see why that matters. The engine is the same, if it has a fault, it has a fault. I personally don't want a ticking time bomb in my car. I don't see how a manual transmission would affect the crankshaft any different than an auto transmission. The transmission connects to the flywheel, it's a long way from the crankshaft.

It does create some questions for all B58 motors, but my guess is the manual transmission puts some specific stress that wasn't anticipated or accounted for.

It could even be a certain batch of parts from a supplier that had a manufacturing defect.

I'd be more concerned if I owned the car. if any of you own the car and go thru this recall, I'm curious what you plan on doing as far as approaching BMW with concerns for the future.

I'm thinking this was a defective part, considering that link above indicates that only 45 cars were affected. Seems to have been corrected a while ago.

well it's only 45 cars bc they're only recalling the manuals. there's probably not a lot of manuals out there to begin with

True.

I do know for a fact that on some engine designs, having a manual transmission puts more stress on the craftshaft when the clutch is depressed and that lateral force is exerted against the flywheel/crankshaft. It's called "crank walk" if I'm not mistaken.

Again, this could totally be offbase as to what's happening.
