Never heard of such a case, but we have a hard time believing a transfer box that creates noise with an open clutch is able to function normally when operating.

I guess you are hearing a grinding noise from something in the rest of the drivetrain. Maybe a worn bearing or something touching because of a worn bushing. So something that gets amplified in RWD mode, but is already there anyway.

This needs to be checked by mechanic directly at car.

Thanks for the reply.

Finding a good mechanic is a bit tricky here (I'm near Padova in Italy). Official dealer will just suggest to replace everything, as they always do. I'm thinking to look for a good BMW specific workshop in Austria or even in Munich. Any suggestions welcomed.

There is another noise, high tone, coming only in AWD mode, at speed between 120-160km/h and with throttle on. This seems to be front diff. But this is not linked to xDelete anyway.

Are the calibration issues with reflashing very common? I bought xdelete but I am hesitating to flash. =(

Garage List
I had no issues or noise when using xdelete. It actually came in handy one morning. I got a flat on one of my 17” snow tires. Had my daughter bring me two of my 18” all seasons. Threw them on the back and the car was making weird noises while exiting the freeway. Remembered I had xdelete and turned off xdrive and no more noise the rest of the way home. Patched the flat and went back to awd for the winter.

I changed oil in front diff. No effect, the high tone noise is still there. Happens as described above - only in AWD, high speed, throttle on, revs range 3-4K.

But You didn't changed oil in transfer box. Some time it's helps. It's cheap and simple thing.

What is the mileage and year of the car?

The car is 2014, 102,500 km now.
I'm thinking to change the transfer box oil (not sure yet if I take the box out or do several 1/2 volume changes).

What I'm not getting - why the noise is coming from the transfer box only in RWD mode and only when throttle is over 50% and for just few seconds.
My guess is that at this moment, when torque is coming up, the car would normally engage the clutch to connect front wheels. But xDelete prevents it from doing so. Could the clutch actuator still be moving, but not full way?

I just finished reading all 25 pages of this, what a ride.

2019 to now is a long time, my wagon should be here any day, and this will be applied early on in ownership. Thanks for the read, all.

There is always a norm! Especially in Germany! There is even a norm for how a norm should be defined.

It has been discussed that the driveshaft of 340i/440i xDrive is the same as the RWD versions.... which is good. However, I just learned that the rear differential is different! The one in the xDrive versions is used also on 330i/430i RWD.... suggesting it is not as strong as the one used in 340i/440i RWD cars, which is only used on those engines (with RWD).

Hence xDelete is putting quite some extra stress on the rear differential... which is NOT identical with the rear differential on RWD cars!

Hi,

Does anyone else have problems with dtc working too sensitively when xdelete is active?
On a dry paved road, the dtc flashes and cuts off engine power even during normal slow acceleration. It doesn't matter if I drive 10 km/h or 130 km/h, I can't accelerate even at half power without the dtc starting to limit the power. When xdelete is disabled, dtc works normally on both grippy and slippery surfaces.

I increased the pressure of the rear tires by about 0.3 bar (the rear already had more pressure than the front) which helped a little, but not much.

Does anyone have any tips on what could be causing this/what I could try to fix it?

The driveshafts take a beating from abuse...not really from engine torque. So drifting around, wheel-hopping etc. can kill them...just like in any car. The induced torque through shock-loads is much higher, than anything the engine can produce. (RWD and AWD have same output shafts at the rear)
I see now that sport mode for f-series has been released. Have you done something differently or is it still not safe to use? I was thinking about trying it but this post worries me a bit. Can I run sport mode on a daily basis?
