Were going to need to have a lot of modified water pipes to offset the damage to the environment Putins 3200 troops playing war games this week will do.

Yes, you must have an external energy source, whether that is harnessing and harvesting from the obvious, or looking to the little more obscure.

We all give off about 100 Watts, just sitting around. As an example, can we harvest some of that waste energy to keep our phone charged? Not easy, but something that is definitely being considered by some in the science field.

We can harvest energy from the radio waves around us, it is quite easily done. But imagine a serious development that does this at a commercial level, 'zaps' energy from all our 'radio' based communication systems.
I like the idea of people power, the principle I suppose has been around for a long time in automatic watches and glad/hope it is being taken further, I have a 30 year old watch that I wear daily for 16 hours approx and it runs 24 hours a day and never needs winding this technology nearly died in the 80's/90's due to quartz movements but seems to be making a comeback and would be nice to see something similar developed further to run smart watches etc

Probably all down to the effiency of what you are using the captured power to run how successful it will be
There are many new energy harvesting technologies being touted including roads and pavements, the idea being that the object passing along the surface would create energy through minute movements in the materials which in turn creates micro-movements which can be harvested through induction coils etc.

I'm not convinced. The energy required to build these systems would be significant, and energy harvesting would of course rob energy from the person or vehicle concerned. Deflection in roads reduces the efficiency of the wheel/tyre rolling on the road surface.

Whichever way we cut it, there's currently no such thing as free and unlimited man-made energy, but we are getting better at harvesting renewables.

Don't worry about it, unless ideas are aired no new ones come about

Ironically you're not to far away with how Geopower stations work, pressurised water comes up from underground springs at around 300 degree C, the steam released powers turbines to produce electricity and the water is used to heat up fresh water supplies to pipe to houses for heating/hot water, in Iceland they even use the surplus to heat pavements up in Reykjavik in Winter (that's probably most of the year round)

You just need to think on a bigger scale

I see what you mean, could make us all fitter I suppose, it needs to start by making everything as efficient as possible in the first place, my watch analogy doesn't count for anything by today's need but I like the fact I seem to put in less energy than that it requires to run but that's obviously too simplistic

Agree, not been convinced on this one, for the reasons you highlight. Smooth roads would help solve the wasted energy problem. But as that is never going to happen, harvesting of wasted energy has merit if the vehicle's spring/damper system is designed to be a generator, help charge an EV's batteries. Then it makes more sense.

We need a serious debate on the benefits of xDrive as well, not had one of those in 15 minutes. Also, can someone tell me where I refill the AdBlue in my car as I can't be arsed to look it up.

By the way, I earn £300k pa.
