BMW Genius at Dealer...

Guys, yesterday I picked up my new GC at the dealer. Most things went great; my CA is quite a good guy, Finance guy was great, no hard sell on any extras, but I had an issue with my iPhone/Bluetooth connection to the car.

The issue was, when listening to podcasts or Tune In radio via Bluetooth, if I lock the phone or just switch it back to the Home screen, the audio stops. So I asked for help. They said don't worry our BMW Genius expert will help you out!

This electronic whizzkid sits in my car and tells me: 'that's how it's supposed to work, some apps are not registered and BMW do not support running in the background…'

Me: That's ridiculous, works fine in my old 2012 F30

BMW Genius: It's different in the newer models

Me: How can I listen to anything if it will stop when the phone locks it’s screen after 3 minutes.

BMW Genius: Sorry that's how it works, you'll have to plug the phone in

So at this point I was seriously thinking I have to cancel this car as I mostly listen to TuneIn Radio in the car and I hate plugging it in. Very annoyed as I waited so long for the car and generally I love it. Then I had the idea to test the phone with the car off and it was doing the same thing when listening from the phone’s speaker. I rebooted the iPhone everything started working fine in the car. So just another iOS8 bug.

I turn to the ‘Genius’ and say ‘Registered Apps not supported by BMW???’. Now he tells me he only knows Android he’s not familiar with iPhones. I said then why did you give all the nonsense about registered apps, blah, blah, blah…also, how can you call yourself ‘BMW Genius’ then say I don’t know anything about iPhones???

Looking forward to when they send me the survey...

What dealership was this and what was the kid's name?

Please let us know. I'd like to send him maybe a bottle of wine or some sort of gift for having to deal with someone like you.

Yeah you're being a little over zealous, its true, I know if you go to the home screen it will stop, I forget whether or not locking stops the music but I think it does.

I would come up with some stupid crap to tell you if it were me too, however if he knew more he could have explained that it's really a bug with iOS 8 and not the car.

I will say some of the Geniuses are much more knowledgeable than others, the ones at my local dealership are true true enthusiasts and they know an impressive amount.

So you think it's totally reasonable for a BMW Genius who's job is to be a specialist in how a BMW's electronics work to (A) start making up nonsense stories about why something doesn't work then (B) say he doesn't know anything about the most popular phone there is?

You're a real easy-going guy the SA's must love you when you bring your car in with a problem!

Nope you're completely wrong and I've got it working fine now. Podcasts/radio from iPhone should not stop when you go to the home screen or if you lock it.

No not stuff playing form the Music app on the phone, but the Spotify app will stop.

Obviously the stuff from the built in Music app would not stop because it can be played using the iPod interface on the car.

Spotify is working fine for me with phone back on the Home screen or locked. Try rebooting your phone see if that fixes it.

Oh shit, this whole thread I did not realize you were talking about over bluetooth. I don't know why it went right over my head because I read it all.

He is right about the apps having issues when plugged in and using the actual BMW apps.
Over bluetooth you can do whatever you want, lock it, leave the app, it should always play regardless.

Don't ding them on the survey. Your salesperson whom you said you liked will pay that price. email BMW about him if you want to go after him for that.

This. Survey only affects the CA. you know, cause he/she is who set up the waiting room, ordered the pastries, cleaned the restroom, etc

Sorry for sarcasm, i just hate how the surveys work. dont hurt your guy

Well, if you've ever dealt with the GENIUSES at the Apple Genius Bar then this should be no surprise to you.

IMO there are absolutely amazing . Just because they don't tell you what you want to hear doesnt make them wrong. They have replaced a couple of Mac books and always treated us fairly.

You sound like a massive pain in the ass.

Play it over Bluetooth, that'll fix your issue. Also have fun being a complete ass and burning your CA over something that was beyond his or her control, that's who the survey hurts not the Genius employee.

As others have said, dont take our your frustration on the survey....

That being said, i dont think your an ass or overreacting. I had a similar experience with bmw regarding my m-performance exhaust where it was CLEARLY mounted crooked (like 20% angle) , tips were pointing sideways and unequal length, and a bunch of other crap....when i asked the 'shop foreman' wtf is going on he just said 'thats just how it is' and wouldn't budge to make it right until i contacted bmw directly with photos, and sure enough it was fixed after that.

Its not really about the phone or in my case the mounting, because glitches/mistakes happen, but it seems that they are always in the business of covering their ass and trying to convince the customer that 'thats just how it is' instead of accepting responsibility and trying to fix the issue.

Up to you of course, but I'd maybe cut him a little slack. The smartphone integration on BMWs is all over the place and the most confusing I've ever seen. Add to that, the confusion over OS releases (particularly iOS, which has problems) and it's easy to see how expertise in that area is a bit light. They have to cover ALL smartphones after all, in addition to every other feature in every model.

Reminds me of a time years ago when the SA was going over the features of my Nissan Z. This was back when cassettes were the medium of choice. There was a button on the sound system "MTL", which was for when you used "Metal" tapes. The SA is going over all the buttons in an authoritive/"Genius" manner and comes to the MTL button. He says, "This is the 'melter' button". Knowing what it really was, I asked him what the 'Melter' button did. He said with confidence, "Oh that makes the audio melt from song to song....it's a high end feature". WHA?!?!?

Yup, definitely an ass. Another insufferable prick who thinks he's a badass because he bought a no line 328i and "traded up" to a 428i. I wish I could be as important as you are.

I'm not a BMW Genius nor do I really need to consult one because unlike you, I'm intelligent enough to figure out this sorta thing myself.

Not only that, but then he feels compelled to come online and tell everyone about it. He strikes me as the type of person who would complain to a restaurant manager about a server who wasn't able to confirm if the tuna in his salad nicoise was dolphin safe or not. Then, of course sharing with his friends on Yelp.

I think the funniest bit is how he thinks there is someone with an actual title of "BMW Genius." They sent the poor kid over because he was the most green and everyone else on the floor was sick of dealing with him. "Yeah, sure...Johnny will help you out with that. He's the BMW Genius, he's great..."

If you are going to come here and complain, clearly trying to find a solution to the problem your Genius couldn't solve, don't you think you owe it to the forum to tell us all how you resolved the issue? Isn't that the whole point here?

He meant that OP was taking the title "BMW Genius" literally.

So they aren't idiotic just because you can't comprehend the point we're making.
