Rattle Rattle
Anyone else have issues with their engine cover rattling? The engine has always had a pretty good vibration being a diesel, but the engine cover has recently started rattling pretty loudly at idle. If I pull the cover off the rattle goes away, so it's definitely the cover and not a motor mount or anything. I have it clipped in properly in the rear and snapped in on the front, but it still has enough play to rattle. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue and found a way to secure it better?

Yes, the OEM engine covers are very poor and vibrate a lot. It's a bad design.
I've resorted to using several self-adhesive felt pads between the cover and various engine/ancillary components such as the top of the air filter housing. It also doesn't help that my car has a front strut brace, so there's felt pads there as well. It doesn't look pretty, but it's effective.

Can you see any marks on the underside of the cover where it could be touching something? Try putting a sticky rubber pad there?
Recently, my car seems to have started a drumming sound. I’ll try removing that cover to see if it’s related. |

I just had the dealership replace my engine mounts under warranty only to find out i think it's from the cover or the airbox (both are known to rattle) hahaha so i got some free mounts out of that..
edit: the mounts did do something though and they did eliminate the noise 99% of the time just to clarify IT DID help, enough so that i don't care to chase down the rattle for now

When the engine mounts get loose, it's perfectly plausible that the top cover would start rattling.

Yeah, I cant guarantee the mounts aren't responsible, but the motor has always vibrated pretty heavily. And me popping the cover on and off may have worn things in a bit, just installed a catch can. Either way it's definitely the cover making noise, might have to find some felt with a sticky side and build up under the cover or something. Usually mounts start shaking at speed, at least when they really go. this is more just an annoying sound at idle.

That's the issue I had, a rattle noise at idle. Mounts are actually not responsible for shaking at speed, they get worn most at idle, heavy acceleration from a stop, and engine start/stop You can test your mounts by brake torquing the engine (one foot on brake, other on the accelerator pedal) and you will see it twist.

hmm, interesting. So by that do you mean have someone else brake torque the car while you watch with the hood open? Or can you see this happening from the drivers seat?

it's best to have another person, or maybe setup a camera or something

Kind of interesting, I have been getting drivetrain malfunction errors, one about every 500 miles for a long time now. The code clears itself in 30 seconds and is either charging pressure too high or monitoring of calculated injection quantity error. I figured it was my tune. Troubleshooting with ISTA performs a half dozen tests but always says everything is fine except for the EGR, which is expected. A couple nights ago the drivetrain error popped up three times on one 100 mile drive, so I was thinking it might be something more serious.
I got home and checked, Turns out it was just the same codes, but in playing around with ISTA I found a section to reset adaptations. I figured what the heck and I reset the adaptations for everything listed... the emmissions system, the air system, and the fuel system. I was shocked to find that theres far less vobration... the engine cover no longer rattles and the car seems to drive much smoother now. Not sure if that is going to resolve my intermittent errors, but I'm definitely pleased with the results! |

It's going to learn those adaptations again. Usually that would be the tune causing it to do that. Very often the tuners decalibrate some injector calibration maps, and it affects a lot more than they're asking for.
