Why is a computer programmer a higher risk than a job seeking graduate?

Have a multicar policy with son as main driver/policyholder on one vehicle, renewed when he was job hunting, so put down occupation as a graduate looking for a job < 6 months at the time. Roll forward 4 months, now with job as a software developer so attempted to change driver occupation details.

Surprised to find a quote for £53 increase in premium.

So question as in title - why?

Statistically computer programmers crash more?
Probably a load of bollox unless they have poor eyesight after sitting in front of the computer for so long

I suspect the answer is - it isn't higher risk, they just know you're a semi-captive customer as your alternative is to pay an exit fee.

If you work you commute (historically!) and statistically most accidents happen in the rush hour? Car parked all day in an office / public car park with statistically more accident damage or break ins?

Who knows, its a dark art this insurance stuff.....

I'd agree with this, pretty sure my insurance decreased when going from student to software developer, but then I was also 21 when I graduated with 3/4 years driving experience.

You think little things like that matter, they will assume he will be using it anyway! That will be what the program says....

They'd earn more so likely nicer car which means average claim cost will be higher.
Graduate job seeker = cheaper car high excess so less likely to claim and when they do probably less value

It's well known computer programmers make more use of their cars complicated infotainment and are more distracted while driving.

Maybe.

Might just be that premiums have gone up generally? They'll only recalculate when there's a change of details. Have you tried a comparison site - it might be worth paying an exit fee if you can cover it with a better deal?

'cause, on average, they all sit at their computers all day, do f-all exercise, are loner mummy boys, cant get a girl friend, play computer role playing games all night, get over tired during the day, get over excited at the sight of a slightly clad girl at the traffic lights and they get heart attacks and crash into a building?

I thought it was funny...

Clearly there are generalisations about all jobs, and I can say that as a boring grey accountant....

Is it just me or has there been an outbreak of prickliness on the forum lately? Speaking as an ex-accountant, sometime software developer and mostly programme/project manager I thought the post was quite funny.

But I've got thick skin and broad shoulders so it takes quite a lot to piss me off.

Too many sensitive souls around nowadays Zed, a couple of years working for me 10 years ago would have hardened them up

Yeah, I don't know if it's an internet thing, or a lockdown thing, or a snowflake millenial needy fucking weak never got enough love girly bitch thing, but I'm from that generation that says "you're a twat", "no you're a twat" and then we just have a beer and talk about something else.

Don't know what's up with some people tbh.

Originally I thought fair enough, if you read the OP it says his son is a Computer guy, and the response in question does say 'heart attack'. Even in jest I'm sure no one wants to read that about a family member. However Bryan isn't the OP to be fair though.

Well worth a bit of this one.

I'm a software developer and this does ring true for some of my colleagues. I'm not your typical developer but do enjoy playing computer games and playing football once a week.
