N20/26 Timing Chain Class-Action

For those who have experienced this issue, have you guys already sent in your paperwork?

The legal jargon is a bit confusing. Not sure if it means 3/18/2021 the latest.

Side note;
Lucky me I qualify for a 75% refund

The case has been settled, there's no need to send in any paperwork to join the action.
https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2...-reached.shtml

The last scheduled court date was only 5 days ago, so no official word has been issued by BMW yet. They would have to send out notices to all affected owners laying out the procedure for reimbursements.

Was the hearing recorded and publicly available to watch if so?

Also, this settlement is only for replacements/repairs that were performed due to either a failure or because there were early symptoms, correct?

My 2015 428i is at ~66k miles and still no audible symptoms, so I am not able to pre-emptively get the replacement done with reimbursement, right?

I've been contemplating selling the car vs. paying for the repair pre-emptively, but if I were able to get the timing chain repair done at BMW's expense, then I would definitely keep it for a long time.

Like any warranty BMW isn't going to fix something that isn't broken. That would require issuance of a recall, which hasn't happened. The fact that it hasn't is an indicator that the timing chain problem isn't as widespread as it would seem by what you read on forums. There are no actual numbers out there that I've been able to find.

You need to provide documentation demonstrating proper oil changes, maintenance etc thats why I am asking.

i called my dealership voicing my concern for this n20 class action lawsuit.
they told me to contact bmw na and they told me to bring the 2015 f36 in for service check. the chain was loose from what the tech reported. they contacted
bmw na again and they agreed to do 55/45. the original repair cost was $6000.
i agreed to the $2800. and hope to get it back from the lawsuit. i got my car back 2 days later and they warranted everything! i got lucky!

Did you have any symptoms before bringing it in?

Only get money when you have done the repair. Read the terms.

Lawyers $3.7 million. Alot of us will never see a penny because nothing happened to the timing chain.

I havent gotten a letter in the mail, but i have replaced the timing chain on my 2012 f30. Would I be eligible for any compensation since it is a 2012? It only has 83k miles and was replaced at 82k miles.

I'm the original owner of a 2013 n26 F30 328i at 76k miles. My radiator had a crack so I went to my local mechanic today to get it checked out. I ended up agreeing to do my timing chain too. Is this something I could get reimbursed for? There was no noise from the TC. I'm doing it just to be safe, I plan on keeping the car for as long as I can.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it depends on the terms.

If they told you that they heard or saw signs of wear, then maybe. But if they convinced you to do it "pre-emptively", with no signs of wear, then I don't think you will be reimbursed.

If you're planning on keeping the car for the long run, then don't feel bad about it. Enjoy the car knowing the engine is less likely to tear itself up!

I'm at 68k now and will probably have it done pre-emptively in the next 10k or so if I don't hear any whining noises.

Has the settlement been finalized? The gelis vs bmw website (timingchainmodulesettlement.com) doesn't say that. I'm waiting until it's official before replacing it.

I would think that only a BMW dealer would be able to get approval from BMW for a pre-emptive timing chain replacement.

Anyone that got their timing chain replaced at an Indy gone through the reimbursement process? I have a 2014 X3 that I might get the chain done preemptively since the warranty is only good for 8 years. The only thing that worries me is the proof of adequate oil changes since I've done almost all the oil changes myself.

A lot of indy shops are aware of this problem. My experience is that if you tell them about the settlement and the 3k cap, theu will take a look for you and document that it is coming loose. They want the business.

Receipts for the oil and filter purchases are sufficient. I'd still go to a dealer to inquire about a pre-emptive timing chain replacement. If a dealer concludes that the chain is likely to fail soon they can probably get approval for it. Chances of that with an Indy are slim to none.
