  • 1,000 bytes decimal is a binary kilobyte, or 2^10 = 1,024 binary bytes.
  • 1,000,000 bytes decimal is a binary megabyte, or 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes or 1024 binary bytes ^2.
  • 1,000,000,000 bytes decimal is a binary gigabyte, or 2^30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes or 1024 binary bytes ^3.
Incidentally, this is why an 8 GB Thumb Drive, or 8,000,000,000 bytes decimal, which / 1024^3, = 7.45 GB binary bytes actual capacity, and why some manufacturers' 8 GB flash drives end up being slightly too small to accommodate USB2, and possibly USB3 too.

Thus, allowing for some minor differences due to rounding, we effectively both have the same thing:
  • DVD or USB 1 = 7.07 GB binary, which is 7.07 GB x 1024^3 = 7,591,354,695 decimal bytes.
  • DVD or USB 2 = 7.44 GB binary, which is 7.44 GB x 1024^3 = 7,988,639,170 decimal bytes.
  • DVD or USB 3 = 7.35 GB binary, which is 7.35 GB x 1024^3 = 7,892,002,406 decimal bytes.
Then to complicate things even more, size on disk is another matter, as data will always occupy a full cluster on the disk. So for example, a disk formatted to use 4k cluster sizes, with one 3.4k file on it and another 4.k file on it will occupy 16k of space, even though the actual file sizes total only 7.5k:

File............................|------3.4k------|....|-----------4.1k--------| = 7.5k data
Disk Blocks (Cluster).....|--------4k----------|--------4k----------|--------4k----------| = 16k storage space occupied

For this reason, as small a cluster size as possible is always desirable, else as data is written to the disk, a lot of storage space is wasted, particularly with large numbers of very small files.

This is also why the size on disk you report in parenthesis is slightly larger than your actual total data decimal sizes reported.

Anyway, your disks are setup correctly and they match, and they should each fit on an 8 GB Thumb Drive, depending on the manufacturer of course.
For future reference, for me, using Mac OSX and unrarx, USB2 and USB3 files would not fit on a Kingston Data Traveler 8 GB flash drive. I loaded those two files on a larger flash drive and the install went flawlessly. Someone earlier in the post suggested using larger drives and so it seems prudent to download the files and extract them to the folders then see how big they are before buying an 8 GB flash drive. My flash drives, formatted to FAT32 were 7.8 GB. My suggestion, given the relatively low cost of drives, is to use one 8 GB and two 16 GB flash drives if you are planning to buy the drives for this purpose and don't know for sure that your files will fit on the drive. Then you will have a couple of 16 GB drives for some music files!

Oh, and by the way, shawnsheridan was phenomenal in helping me get this figured out. A great bimmerpost member!

I updated my maps to 2013-2 back in July the "non-BMW" way. Am I right in assuming that the FSC code is a one-off affair, rather than allowing multiple updates for a set period of time?

It is VIN and Map Version (Region, Type, and Year) specific, so 2014 requires a new FSC Code.

Thanks for the reply, so it's as I suspected.

If it's year specific does that mean that if I upgraded to 2014-1 say, then the code would also work if there was a 2014-2 released later in the year, or is it tied to the sub-year version as well?

No. It is version specific. 2014-2 is a different version than 2014-1 is.

Is 2014-1 a typical naming convention? My car previously was on just 2012 with no hyphen and number. Does this mean BMW will release an additional 2014 map update?

It is available for download now for anyone interested in updating their Europe or North American maps to 2014-1 version. This is a 3 USB Thumb Drive version that requires 3 each 8 GB or larger Fat32 Formatted USB Thumb Drives. It can also be done with a single 8 GB USB Thumb Drive, although it is not the preferred method.

For those with pre 09/2009 builds, you can make 3 Double Layer Double Density Drives instead and install it from DVD Drive.

You will of course to need to purchase an FSC Code as always to install it, but your net cost will be 80% less than ordering Online, and even > 80% less than what the dealership charges.

Attachment 920267

PM me if you are interested in the 2014 Map Upgrade details.

Most years they release two versions, one around the 4th quarter leading into the year, and another around the middle of the year, which quickly get superseded by the first release of the following year.

xxxx-1, and xxxx-2 is the typical naming convention, however, they have used variations of it like xxxx and xxxxi.

2010, 2011, and 2013 all had two releases. 2012 had only one. It is impossible to predict what BMW will do in 2014; however, already in their internal documents, SWID 00280008 has been reserved for 2014-2 North America Premium, so I expect they will. But, this is still almost 10 months away from happening if it does.

Sorry, I can't answer that specifically as I can't personally test Europe Maps. Every new map release includes new roads and updated Postal Codes though, but whether they are the absolute latest version is doubtful.
