In the EU, the recommendations remains for LL-04 5W-30 oil. In the US, the recommendations changed to LL-12FE 0W-30 since around 2016 to meet CAFE standards. Less lubrication from thinner oil but improved flow when engine is cold and better economy, presumably since we drive shorter distances here in the US due to lack of public transport in many towns. I have been using LL-12FE with great Blackstone reports, so I will just stick with it despite giving up some lubrication protection a bit.

Pennzoil is owned by shell. Castrol is OE (at least for mine).

Anything that meets LL-04 should be fine, it comes down to personal brand preference.

Just done a oil + oil filter change, using Millers Oil LL04 5w-40, sounds teeny bit quieter due to the thicker oil.

Some places do recommend going for 5w-40 (if it meets LL04 (N47)) if you have high mileage.

Depends a lot on your local climate/location as well. The LL-04 approval means it will work properly in your engine, but depending on other operating parameters (fuel quality, temps, distance of average drive, mileage, tuned or not tuned, etc.) not all LL-04 oils will be equal.

I second the Pennzoil/Shell Platinum Euro L, if you can find it easily. Best oil for the price. I also like Motul X-Clean+ and lately Total INEO MC3.

So what is the deal with Rotella? I joined the Facebook BMW Diesel group and everybody out in the mid-west seems to love Rotella.

Nothing "wrong" with it, it's a great HDEO oil. I've used it in other cars with great results.

But it's not tested against LL-04, nor approved for such.

So you'd be using an oil that's not approved for your N47 engine. Seeing as how you can find LL-04 approved oil for $23 a 5L jug (PP Euro L), why use a non-approved oil for the same price?
