F30 xDrive any different than E90?

Just wondering if anyone knows if there has been any evolution to the xDrive system (mechanical or electronic/software) on the F30 vs the E90. Couldn't find anything and just assumed it was the same but don't really know.

To my eye, the F30 xDrive models appear to sit higher than the E90/92 xDrives.

I'm curious to know if there is any mechanical reason.

Huge difference in the way the car handdles. E90 much tighter. Base F30 xdrive feels like a lexus

That's more a function of the suspension (which is unique on the xdrive) but really unrelated to the mechanics and electronics of the AWD system itself which is what I am curious about. I have not driven the base xdrive suspension as I have the DHP. Comfort mode is a softer ride than the e90 xdrive - much more comfortable for relaxed driving or bad roads but in sport mode it no doubt handles better than the e90 xdrive did.

i don't know the answer to your question, but what do you mean by (unique on the xdrive)? i thought base xdrive suspension is the same you would get with a base, no line 3, or for that matter same as luxury or modern? Maybe i was wrong? Also, what are your impression of DHP? I think i went wrong by not getting it.

Completely correct. I also had an 09 335iX and now have a 13 335iX.

Unless you have sport package (the one that allows all 4 driving modes: Eco pro, comfort, sport, and sport +), you are unqualified to answer this.

As carsdoc previously stared, I also think the car in comfort mode is about the same as me e90 was , but once you go to sport it becomes much tighter. It's is by design -- and is the F30 coding holy grail -- how to toggle the sport steering settings to on during comfort mode.

That's also to do with the latest generation runflats. They ride much better than those on the E90.

That's true. I actually have not driven the stock all season run flats yet as I had them put on the BMW winter wheel/tire package when I picked it up which uses Pirelli Scottozero series 2 run flats. These have been around a couple years so don't know how they compare to the older e90 rft or newer stock ones on the f30.

I don't actually know what's different but I'm pretty sure the xdrive has it's own modified version of the base f30 suspension to accommodate the xdrive mechanics (and it's higher). At least on the e90 the xdrive suspension seemed a little firmer than the base but softer than the sport. This was offset though by the increased height a bit.

definitely agree, the older chassis is much tighter and feels like it floats less on the wheels

Same here, just change my E90 xdrive for a F31 xdrive. Also with the E90 somehow i was able to oversteer, with the new F31 not same...
don't know if it is also related that the E90 was manual and F31 is automatic.

I can get mine to oversteer hard with the throttle on my F30. Come out of a corner, get hard onto the throttle, and the nose snaps around.
