M2 F87 Brake Booster and Master Cylinder on F30 328i

Hey, I'm planning to upgrade my brake kit with M sport (front rotors 340 mm with 4 pistons, rear rotors 345 mm with 2 pistons).

AFAIK, we have to upgrade the brake booster and master cylinder if the vehicle has small brakes otherwise brake pedal will very soft. (My car vin: K647610). I don't have any sports brakes, only small sizes – 312 mm.

So I searched on ebay with this code: 29 2284895 03 and found the same parts from F87 M2 2020. So the main question is, this M2 has a manual transmission, my BMW 328i has an automatic transmission. Is there a difference between manual and automatic? When I look up the part number on ECS or Turner they say 29 2284895 03 this part will fit the 328i and there is no difference between manual/automatic. But I just want to make sure...

Thanks!

If you have 328i without xdrive you originally should have 312mm front and 300mm rear with small 160mm handbrake, both one piston floating caliper.

In this case according to realOEM you already have master cylinder appropriate for MSport brakes.
Brake booster differs - 328 have 230mm brake booster while MSport brakes uses 209mm (the same booster as 335i version). Im not sure here however from its size i would suppose that without changing brake booster you would have too sharp brake feeling not the other way. Maybe someone with more knowledge in this area can comment it.

Another thing is small handbrake in non xdrive version, so you would have to change both guard plates on rear axle which requires wheel bearing disassembly and its a loooot of work...

And at last coding. As far as i understand there are two alternative scenarios:
- if you decide to change that brake booster you should code VO code 2NH
- if you keep original brake booster HO-Wort SPBR should be coded

Hey kepmic , thank you for the detailed information! I've successfully installed the M2 brake booster and M sport brakes on my F30 328i. Everything fits perfectly, after upgrading the brake booster I also coded it with the S2NHA option.

The brake pedal feels very sharp. I had only one problem with the brake pads. I bought HAWK HPS 5.0 Street performance, it makes a very loud sound during hard braking (tack, tack, tack). When I checked the brakes again, I saw that the shims had fell off the pads (probably these are moving when hard brake). Ideally, shims should be very sticky to the back of the pads. After noticing this problem, I ordered OEM BMW M3 F80 pads for my M brakes (340 mm front, 345 mm rear) and issue was solved.

I'm attaching some photos of the process:

Thanks for lot of pictures. In my 328 i also made Msport brakes retrofit (F:340, R:345), however without changing brake booster.
As pads i used regular ATE pads as they are overall reputable brand, pretty cheap (in comparison to other pads for this setup) and someone, somewhere has stated that they are made for ATE by Galfer (at least GG friction index on them doesnt deny it). My rear pads also came with loose metal shims and i also worried they would be problematic, however up to this moment everything looks OK (1500km).

On these Hawk pads have you used a ceramic grease between pad and shim?

If your vehicle is a 328i, brake booster is not an important thing. There is just a slight difference between the M2, M3 and my stock booster. Everyone told me that you will have too bad pedal (soft) if you don't change booster.. but overall there is no big difference.

Regarding with hawks, yes I tried everything. I even glued the back of the shim, but it only lasted 15-20 minutes (sound gone in first try, but it starts make noise again after 15 minutes). Since these were in the front, they made a lot of noise. If there were rears, I think I wouldn't hear any sound at all

According to realOEM in F30 there are these brake booster used:

320i - 34336851097 - BOSCH 0 204 776 581
328i - 34336851099 - BOSCH 0 204 781 579 (230mm)
335i - 34336851098 - BOSCH 0 204 827 944 (203mm)
F80 - 34337849876

Im wondering what is the size of 1097 and 9876 booster and construction differences between every of them.

Maybe this soft pedal feeling is related to 320i retrofits?

I guess so, people should definitely upgrade the brake booster + master cylinder head if they have a 320i

Can you clarify that there isn't much difference between the actual feel of the pedal from swapping to the M2 version? Did you have the brakes coded to your car at that point?

Yes, I coded it with the S2NHA option. When I upgrade the brake booster with M2 I can't really feel anything. Let's give more detailed information about all models:

* M2, M3 using 27mm master cylinder head,
* 328i, 330i, using 25mm master cylinder head
* 316, 320d using 23 mm master cylinder head.

If you have a 328i you won't feel any difference between the M2 or M3, if you have a 316, 320d you will definitely feel the difference with the coding.

316, 320d:

328i, 330i:

M3, M2:
