My steering wheel is dirty and I decided to use leather wipes to clean it after a few wipes I realised that the leather dye was being removed with the leather wipe being black. Is there any product out there which is safe to use for leather steering wheels ?

I think you'll find that's mainly dirt, gross I know!

It isn’t as the colour off the steering wheel came off too

Dr Leather wipes always get a good rep, I've used them and not that amazed by them or the smell but they should be gentle enough?

If not there is a genuine bmw leather cleaner

I agree, mine looks like it's coming off. I would give it a good wiping but I don't want to make it worse.

You don't want to put any kind of conditioner on it, that will make it sticky and go shinier even quicker.

Many of the sports wheels seemed to suffer with the coating/dye degrading rapidly, as I've mentioned on a number of threads before, even cars with 20-30k on the wheel looked like it'd done 150k.

I'm not going to go into detail again, but my 15 plate 435 sport had the steering wheel replaced under warranty at 8k becuase of this issue. My wifes 14 plate 530GT is starting to go patchy at 50k miles, and my 14 plate 640 I had a re-trim by Royal Steering wheels as that too was looking shabby at 26k miles when I bought it approved used.

If you bought the car used, chances are the dealer/trader has tried to tart it up a bit prior to sale, and that is what you are now seeing coming off when you're trying to clean it.

With my F30 M-Sport I made the mistake of using a leather balm. This made the wheel sticky and shiny.

My F36 M-Sport which I have had a few months from new, I used Gtechniq I2 Tri-clean to lightly clean all my leather and L1 Leather Guard to seal it all in. I am hoping this will keep my wheel matte.

thats what i do, and have been doing on my retrimmed wheel, and it still looks new 9 months later.

If the stock wheel is already going to shit (which it sounds like it is for the OP), then doesn't really matter what cleaning method is used unfortunately

Leather Repair Company Leather Cleaner for me. No colour loss, stickyness or other nastyness.

This is strange, I've had extended use of 5 BMW's and never seen this happen.

Which wheel are we referring to? Is it the Sport wheel or the M-Sport Wheel?

I know the M-sport wheels notoriously go very shiny if not cared for properly, I have a spare M3/M4 wheel lying around that I'm selling at the moment. It's got 15k on it, no dye loss or fading.
