I wonder if less of us would get caught speeding if we were able to add speed cameras data to our BMW sat navs. I know it's not allowed in Germany but seems daft to prevent it when BMWs are sold abroad.

My tale of woe

Back in March 2 years ago, whilst in a courtesy car from my local dealership, I was certain that I had been flashed going through the smart (dumbest) section of the M5 between J 17 and 16, the limits on the gantry change like fruit machines. After 8 months I had heard nothing
Just before Christmas I received a letter, to my new address telling me that I had been fined £980.00 in my absence, no further info at all. I immediately called the number on the letter to be told that - I had been fined £100 for speeding in March, I had then been fined for failure to identify myself and had been found guilty of failing to reply to a request for payment. Hmm, at what point did they decide I didn't live at the address they were writing to?
So in the words of Spandau Ballet...……… I had to attend court, give a statutory declaration that I had not received any of their letters, all accepted and a £265 fine, I did question the amount and if I could take a speed awareness course, nope was their reply because, the fine system changed 2 months after my offence and that due to time passed, I wasn't eligible for the course.

Why? I hear you moan did I not get the initial fine...…. despite the DVLA and BMW having my new address details, sadly their bodyshop (who had taken a copy of my correct driving licence) decided to forward the initial letter/fine to my old address. Angry phone call resulted in them paying the additional fine and apologising profusely

From memory it was 8 months between NIP and court appearance for me. The 6 points I received (101 in a 70) were dated to time of offence. Remember it being a result as I renewed my insurance in the interim and (after reading small print very carefully!), did not have to declare my conviction until the following years renewal.

Mine was the same re dates. But, they have to give you that date within 6 months of the offence or the charges have to be dropped. My letter with my court date arrived after 5 months and 3 weeks.

I'd suggest 89 in a 60 (assuming the 60 is a national speed limit single carriageway out of town) could be a lot less dangerous than 44 in a 30, and of course you have never done that either....
not really no. I sure someone on bike will not expect or even hear a car coming a the speed.

At the end of the day your speedo would have been reading something like 98mph if they did for 89mph.

So you get off lightly with a band b , 91mph would be band c.

It's more likely to be a bike traveling at 89mph than a car though. Most bike riders I encounter on country roads seem to think the speed limit doesn't apply to them, and that it's still legal to 'filter' round traffic when travelling at speed.

Dont think I've ever owned a car where the speedo over reads by anywhere near 9mph, if yours does I would get if looked at and re-calibrated.

Looks like I'm next, although it's not too bad.
Spotted a camera van on a bridge yesterday whilst I was doing around 80-85 in a 70. It was too late to react. So it's WAZE on the mobile for me in future. In the mean time I'll be checking the post until Feb 25th.

I wouldn't mind, but on the way home I got properly carved up on a roundabout by a HGV, spotted countless people on their phone and a woman having her lunch at the wheel. I bet they all don't get a ticket.

Does Waze show temporary speed camera sites ? Or does it just rely on other users marking their location?

Too right!
I've seen lunatics tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic and generally driving like fools, all things your standard gatso won't pick on.

I'm sure you're right but I suspect the view of the authorities is just because others are getting away with something doesn't mean they should allow speeders to escape prosecution!

Unfortunately speeding is a relatively easy binary offence to enforce - you're either speeding or you're not - and with the development of things like camera technology they can now catch far more people than traffic cars of 20 or 30 years ago could ever have hoped to achieve.

Can't say it's a change I welcome but the reality is it's here to stay and if anything it's only likely to get worse IMO. I'm not convinced how effective things like WAZE are in detecting mobile camera vans so reluctantly I've come to the conclusion that the safest policy is not to stray too far over the limit in areas where you know they're likely to be deployed....

WAZE relies on other users marking the positions. It's very good on major roads where there are lots of road users. I found it very useful on the way home as it even showed where police car had pulled people up ahead on the hard shoulder.

Yep. I'm normally no more than 10-15 over so as not to take the p1ss. I'll just chalk it up as experience. I can afford a few points, it's the thought of having to fund the annual Police xmas party that I object to

Well for me it's been 18 days since I thought I got pinged by a van on a bridge. The postman has just been and still nothing. I am well past 14 days for a NIP

Yeah until I passed another cash van yesterday FFS. I didn't have WAZE on as I was only nipping into town. Just depends on wether they consider 5-7mph over worthy of following up.
